What do the numbers mean?

jackdaniel Dec 04, 2003 10:28 PM

Folks,

I'm new to this hobby so please be patient with me.

When someone refers to an animal with terminology such as
1.1 California King, what is the meaning of the numeric characters? ie 1.0, 1.1, 2.2 etc.

Thanks,

male.female.not sure

so 1.3.1

would be:

1-male, 3 females, and 1 not sure of.

first number is the the number of males, second the number of females, third the number of unknown sex.

example: 1.2.2 (one male, 2 females, 2 of unknown sex)

Just a side note.

Think of it as short hand. That is basically what it is. If you were running a zoo or a large breeding operation, you wouldn't want the clutter or bother of using/writing male, female, unknown a million times. It would be a lot easier to list the sexes this way along with the species name.

For instance, you could write:

1 male L.p.pyromelana
2 female L.p.pyromelana
3 unknown sex L.p.pyromelana

or you could write:

1.2.3 L.p.pyromelana

Both represent the exact same thing.

If you had a lot of animals, which method would you prefer?
