Calico morph; what are your fellings thoughts about it

psychoninja Dec 04, 2003 10:44 PM

In my previous post i posted pics of my ball witht the white and grey spots. In my searching i found this website
Calico morph
My ball has those same colorations and fits the description perfectly. Now are these balls worth more than a normal? im not planning on selling her im just curious. Also do you all feel this is a true morph or just an extreamly pretty normal? Below is a pic of mine again just as a comparison.

From what I can see in your pic, your snake is no where near the snakekeeper's morph. It looks to me like the white spots on your snake ar scars, and I doubt it is genetic. If you want to sell it for a lot of money, you need to take the time to prove it out as a real genetic morph. Untill you do, it is a weird looking normal. Good luck!

Considering your other post that said something to the effect of, "It just popped up after the last shed!" I'd say it was a bad shed that caused very minor damage to the snakes skin. I have seen this "loss of color" happen when some colubrids have had a bad shed due to not enough humidity. It doesn't seem to matter what color it was originally,(red, black, yellow, gray) it comes in white regardless. Some color comes back as the animal heals and grows/sheds and if it heals completely, it will return to the normal coloring it had before this "popped up". If the snake just heals partially, some white may remain.

If it was a genetic morph, don't you think it would have had that coloring before it's last shed also?

Maybe, after it sheds again, it will be a pied!

Since it isn't genetic, and the white just popped up, maybe you can call it a Michael Jackson Ball Python?

Keep him in his own cage if it is an M.J. morph. Don't want any baby balls being messed with. And does he eat mice, rats, or just legless gerbils?

Your snake does NOT fit the picture and description perfectly. Nice try though. Mine had the same thing done to it but I never even considered it a new morph. I thought it was cool looking but not a calico.

that was a funny post. good day

This is whats going to happen......

It is going to lose a bit more and a bit more of the pigment and turn into a grey /white patches. Then one day you will check ont he snake and it will be 90% black and grey. With the top dorsal part of teh snake still regular color but with little flecks of grey and what not in it.
You will then have a "changing" ball. No one knows what causes this but it happens rather often.
Someone posted a pic of one not to long ago.
It will remain like that till next shed. After next shed it will be 100% grey and black.
After that is will start getting dark pigment, etc in the grey areas. The dark pigment will come in with a weird cream yellow color.
It will shed a few times, each time it sheds it will lose the grey and it will be filled in with that creamy color and black.
It will end up very similar to Ralph Davis dirty joe BUT it is not the same thing as dirty joe was born black and grey.
It is very weird and cool, once it is done changing it will be very much like what most people call an IMG. I call them DMG and IMG balls....as they decrease in melanin and then increase into it again.
The ones the snakeepers talk about have random pink dots all down the lower half of their sides. I had one and it changed into a clico animal. I sold it before it hapopened though.
Good luck with your snake, it will surpridse you and dont listen to the sarcastic posts people posted or will post, they have no idea. I have lots of experience with this weird unproven "trait" and can verify that I ahve seen exactly what you have posted turn into what is described above.

While the spots do look similar to the calico morph...you have to read where it says "Calico ball pythons have white patches and /or scales on the lower portion of their bodies". Yours has it on the top. I agree with the other posts that said its probably attributed to a bad shed. Take care
