redestarr Dec 04, 2003 11:50 PM

how much does bearded dragons usually cost?
Is it really safe to buy lizards thru the internet?
im going to be living in dorm in jan .. i have a bird but they don't allow bird so i have to find a home for her .. but i got somebody lined up for her..
anyway they allow fishs and turtle, but i don't like to have fish cause they die on me no matter how well i take care of them and i can't stand the sight of dead fish, i guess it is a bit of a phobia i developed when i was a kid .. and seen a fish go belly up..
so they say i could have a lizard tho.. i like something that is a bit social and fun to be with... so i narrowed down my choice .. of either bearded dragon or leopard gecko.. i been reading like heck on both of them ..

If you're living in a dorm, I'm going to assume you're a student and will be living in rental property for the next couple of years.

A full grown beardie might be an issue with a landlord as they get relatively large quickly. A full grown leo is only 8-10" and can live comfortably in a 10-20 gallon tank. They're social, tame, and friendly (generally). Don't expect them to be friendly right off the bat or be incredibly active and playful. But if you've gone this far in reasearching, I'm going to assume you know that lizards are great pets, but it's not like they're going to run around and play a lot (like a cat or dog). You can handle them (sparingly at first until they're comfortable) and they'll climb all over you and curl up in your comforter on your bed and stuff.

It's going to take time (many months) before your leo is completely used to you and friendly.

I'm considering a beardie (or uro) as well, but likely not for a year or two. Gotta graduate and get my own place first.

Be sure to check out the leo forum and read through the old posts. There's incredibly valuable info there that you won't find anywhere else.

i can attest to what pain in the butt it is to find an apartment that wont take issue with reptiles. even though they dont bark, wont bite the neighbors, and wont poop on the carpet, they scare people. and if you dont tell the landlord you have them and they find out, youre in trouble. especially with a larger reptile or snake, its definetely better to wait until you own a place or have a place you expect to be in awhile that doesnt mind

Hi!

I would definately go with a leopard gecko. when i was living in the dorms a few years ago (thank god I found an apartment nearby that allows pets! =)) the space a beardie needs is, well, about the size of a dorm room, lol. I had a 20 gallon with three leos in it and it was fine in my dorm (we werent supposed to have anything but fish.) and it didnt take up very much space. I'm assuming you are going to have a car with you at college or know someone who does, so you can go and get food. it would be easier with a leo because with bearded dragons, you need to keep your fridge stocked with plenty of fresh veggies for him, and unless you have a full sized fridge, the veggies will take up a lot of room in there. I'm just going by my dorm experience- tiny room with a tiny, short little fridge. your dorm may be bigger, bt still, i would recommend something little, like leos. They make excellent pets and I love em to death =)

now to answer the question your question about cost, it depends on what kind you want.. Im not a pro at beardies but ive seen them around from 35-200 for babies...Get a newspaper or bargain trader and sometime they have them in there.
