Still need the light?

dylan0483 Dec 05, 2003 12:13 AM

Hi everyone,
I've got three red earred sliders... My turtles have been treated like kings since I recieved them as hatchlings. They're now a year old and have grown trememdously. The smallest one is about 3.5 inches and the largest one is probably close to 5. The reason im emailing is to see if they still need the long light. I was told to get it to help the turtles grow but my friend just got a river cooter and wanted to know if he could have the light. I told him i needed to see if my turtles still needed it. Any help. its not the basking light. its the reptisun one. its long and thin and i think it gives usb light? if im butchering the initials i apologize. so is it safe to take it away?

Your turtles still need the UVB light.

unless you move them outside, they will need a uv bulb for their entire life.you should replace the bulb every six months or so as well.flourescent bulbs(depending on type & manufacturer)lose 30-50% of their out put after 6-8 months.
just part of the expierence.
good luck.

You still need the UVB bulb. As others have said, replace it every 6 months. You may want to look into Active Heat mercury vaport UV lights as well - they produce UVB and heat.

You might also want to cut back on the food - 5" in a year is awefully large. Yes, it does happen, but slower growth is preferred.
