I need a wood source

shopaholic Dec 05, 2003 12:22 AM

Does any one know where i could purchase some Oak or other hard wood branches/logs that I could use in a dart tank? Is Cypress a hard wood? Mushroom plugs only deposit well into hard wood but I haven't found any sites that sell anything other than: Cypress, Ghost, and Drift wood. thanks! Maggie

Cypress is not a hard wood and because of the rsein content few fungi are able to de-lignify it. I'll bet most the drift they are selling is some sort of hard wood. But a lot of fungi are species specific, this may not be an issue if you are useing comercialy avalible species rather the spores collected from the wild.
Is there no place near where you live that you can scavange for wood?

I have a person in Kentucky who gets all kinds of wood pieces for me and can do large orders. I don't know how appropriate it is for frog tanks, but I use it in my lizard cages with no problems. It has been cleaned and sterilized. Email me if youa re interested and I can try to find his number.

however, I am going to make an attempt. I just thought it would be easier to buy some. The mushrooms I'd get are commercially available and all the sellers say I need is a Hardwood with bark on it still. Thanks! Maggie

I believe that ghost wood is oak.

...I forgot to say that I need hardwood that still has the bark on it. If its Oak gone crazy, its also Oak that has no bark either. Thats interesting-thanks! Maggie

I think it is oak root sections. There is no bark though, so I guess it wont work for what you need if for.
