with the plants i have for the filter in my tank, i ended up with my very own snail breeding ground. any idea what they are, etc? in one of the pipes leading to another filter area (1/2in water pipe from home depot) thats about 4-5 inches tall, this is what i could get out of it. the walls of the tube were black, there were so many. they seem to go in cycles, ill have about 20 in the whole area, ive at least tripled since then, probably more. i dont mind em too much, but there are waaaaaay too many now. any idea how to curb the breeding? thanks.

Are they football shaped? If so they are probably common pond snail and they are very prolific. All I can suggest is looking for the clear egg clutch they lay and take it out. They are one of those types of snails people hate. I myself have 11 total snails ( 2 black mystery,2 brown mystery, 2 blue mystery,1 gold mystery, and four Colobunian Ramhorned snails.). Some people say they are horrible but they are fun to watch. Take care Shannon

i guess youd call them football shaped, their bellies are more round & the ends are more or less pointy. im not worried too much, there are just getting to be a ridiculous amount of them lately. & on that note, they dont by any chance have a larval/wormy stage? because ive noticed in the last few days, particularly, a bunch of little teeny (i need a flashlight & good eyes to see them) orange-ish wormy things. with the resurgence in snails, im really hoping its just baby snails who dont have shells yet & not something more serious, like someone having worms...i have feeder guppies (3rd generation, now) & i read somewhere theyre notorious for having worms, so ive gotten a little paranoid. ive just recently figured out how to trick one of my turtles to eat them (put fish in freezing water, wiggle finger in front of turtles mouth...when he goes to bite, insert fish instead of finger...mission accomplished.) long story short (too late, sorry) should i be worried?

An effective way for removing snails in freshwater fish tanks is the addition of copper. It comes in a liquid form and it kills off all invertebrates. There is also a product called HAD-A-Snail that you can buy at a pet store. I don't know if they are safe for turtles because I have never used either product on my turtle tank. Make sure you find out some more information before you use them. They are safe for fish, but I'm not sure about turtles.

Heres the kind of snails I have invading my tank, most of them end up in the filter. This one was injured, and as you can see just used the new hole to move thru. Also the link shows a photo of the babies.
