when to sex gecko

archamedes1 Dec 05, 2003 01:29 AM

Today my gecko turned three months old and I was just wondering how old they have to be to determine the sex. I think that archamedes is a female, but I want to make sure. Also is there a way that I can make it easier on me and my gecko when it comes to handling him/her? Every time I try to handle archamedes he/she gets very pissy and makes hissing sounds and trys to get away. I am just wondering if I should give it time or is archamedes always going to be this way. Thanks a bunch.

many people say you can sex them between 4-6 months, but to be positive, i recommend the 6th month.

also, let archamedes get used to your hand being in the tank so she realizes that you're not a threat to her and are trying to eat her after a few days, she's start exploring and will lick your hand - let her crawl on your hand and from there, you can just start letting her walk from hand to hand. handLe for 15 minutes for the 1st few weeks to get her accustomed to handling, then you can do a little more from there she may be a little skittish and pissy at first, but that's just coz she's still a youngin'

take care and good luck!

Hey, any particular reason you spell it Archamedes instead of Archimedes? Just curious! I love unique names

Anyway, three months is probably too young to sex unless you can get a very close look and have experience as to what to look for. I still can't sex mine and they're older than that, but I don't need to sex them yet, anyway.

Young leos are usually skittish and get nervous at a hand coming near them. It takes them a while for them to get big enough that they don't have to be scared of everything, so that instinct dies down. Reward your presence by feeding it while your hand is in the tank and be very gentle when handling it. Don't pick it up, rather, just place your hand and maybe scoot it to walk onto it so it isn't as scared. In time, though, it should surely turn around.
