Incubating eggs - is this true???????

LovelyLeopards Jun 02, 2003 12:33 PM

I've read on this forum that sex is definitely determined after the first two weeks of incubation. I have a bunch of eggs from the beginning of May that I have incubated at 78-82 for females. I want to bump them up to 88 so that they'll hatch sooner as I'll be out of town on their expected hatch date. But, I want to make absolutely sure they won't become males by doing this. Just need some reassurance from people that have actually tried this. Thanks for the input!!!

I would have to say that it is true. If I'm not mistaken, Ron Tremper also informs that the sex is determined in the first two weeks of incubating, So I'd say so.

Yeah your right about tremper doing this that is why this method of incubation is called the "tremper incubation method". It works but supposedly it leads to lots of problems with low hatch rates and things like that. I tried it and my first 2 eggs got all ready to hatch deflated. I waited and nothing happened so i had to cut them open to 2 dead premature hatchlings. Im sure it was the chang ein temp that did it. The leopard gecko manual which was actually written by tremper stats that if you bump up the temp from the original temp it will actually take longer to hatch. Now if you bump it up to 90 from 80 its not going to take longer but say if you were at 84 and bump it to 86 it will. Tremper has used it with great success but i wouldn't try it, its too risky.

I have to agree with Jason on this one. I tried the tremper method with a few clutches this year and had some come out just fine. But I also had two come out deformed, like one had its legs on top of the body instead of underneath and another had a split head. Just weird stuff.
