Watch Out for this SCAM!!!

Hoopy Dec 05, 2003 10:55 AM

Hello,

I recently thought that I sold my 2002 albino ball python to a guy in Houston Texas. He said he would send my a cashier's check for the snake. 3 days later I received a check for $9,500 (yea you heard me right). Anyways, he calls and told me that he had his lawyer send me the money order and asked that I send the remaining money to a shipping company in Colorado. He asked that I send it immeadiately via Western union. Anyways, I told him that although it was a money order, I would have to wait for the check to clear. As the story goes, I put the money order in the bank. 2 days later I checked my account and the $9,500 was listed as part of my account, but was not available for me to withdraw. My bank told me it would take another 2-3 days for the funds to be available. This guy called me 2 times a day begging me to send the money immeadiately and I constantly told him I needed to wait for it to clear. Anyways, the bank told me it should clear by last friday, so I waited. Wednesday night the bank manager himself called me and told me that the money order did not go through and the Federal reserve believed the money order to be counterfeit. At this point I realized that this guy was trying to rob me of a significant amount of cash. I have filed reports with the FBI, the local authorities, and the FBI computer Fraud department. I have meetings with all three agencies this week to give them all the needed evidence. Anyways, for everyone out there listen very carefully.
1) Money Orders and Cashiers check can be counterfeit but still end up in your acccount (but you cannot withdraw the funds)
2) My bank told me that you can put a "stop payment" on money orders or cashiers checks.
3) Please watch your money closely

Don't send ANY snakes or money to anyone ever unless the money order or cashiers check has cleared the bank and is available to withdraw. This situation has caused me alot of stress, time, and money. I was trying to sell my collection to get out of the hobby and the albino was the last animal to sell. Since I thought I had it sold, I let my account with Kingsnake expire (now I have to buy another month). I also could have sold that snake 1 month ago and had more money for christmas, now I have to start the whole sales thing over. Anyways, I was just posting this so everyone in the community watches out for this guy.

His email address is [bleep]

Jerad Huepenbecker

His email addy would have turned me "off" immediately. I generally, avoid sales with anyone with transient email address such as yahoo.com or hotmail.com.

do not reply to ads with those types of addys or the ads with a single name like "Bob" or "John". I will sell and answer questions, however.

As more of us legitimate hobbyists start producing real morphs and offering them for sale, we are going to be "Nobodies". There are going to be lot's of "Nobodies" selling quality animals, and a few "Nobodies" with nothing to sell, but great pictures and promises, only to scam you. If one side insists the funds clear before delivering the animal, and the other side insists on receiving the animal before fully committing the funds, it's going to be challenging to make mail-order deals. Are the sellers in Kingsnake's Classifieds registered businesses with some accountability or can any "Nobody" register and post ads? Just voicing some concerns.

I can not speak for others that sell. But I have a sales tax number for the state of Pennsylvania. I file quarterly. I also have an EIN number with the federal government for tax purposes with federal taxes with my corporation. I am registered that I have farm related business with the Department of Agriculture. I have a CPA filing my corporate returns. I have my own web site with my business domain name. I personally would not purchase from someone with a hidden email. Just not worth it. To many folks out there are getting hurt by scams. Perhaps there should be screening for posting ads. Or some sort of identification to have a classified account. Just my thoughts.

i won't order through the mail unless people on this site suggest the person to me and tell me good things. thats one way to not get ripped off. Also there is enough breeders now that there should be one close enough to drive to that way you can see the animal see the guys facility and know where he lives if he screws ya.

thats just my opinion

I'm investing the money this year. Earliest expected hatches from Het-Het piebalds and Het-Het albinos is summer of 2005, then multiple clutches in 2006. Do I start a registered business now and claim all expenses moving forward with no potential returns until 2005? Or wait until I'm selling something and start depreciating previous expenses? I know this isn't a business forum and laws vary from state to state, just looking for feedback from some of you that have already travelled the path. I haven't seriously looked into this yet. Thanks.

Go to your local government and read the ordinances on the animals you keep. And make sure you can have them.

while it may be legal in the city, an apartment or deed-restricted community (if keeping at the house) may not. You can imagine the horror in some of my neighbors eyes as I take out an 8 foot boa to clean his cage. My neighbors are cool and I'm licensed so all is well.

Unless you are going to file long form it doesn't matter if you get the license now or later. It looks better when you can tell someone that i've been in business 3yrs instead of 6mos; people are funny about numbers. Remember once you do this you will have to start filing for tax collected to the state and maybe your local city or county. You will just have to file you made no money each time you file until you start actually selling them in 2005. Hope this helped.

Humm A short question.
What about his expenditures? Food, electric, equipment this year? On a C schedule he can deduct it this year. I started in '93 and took deductions on supplies and animals.

Sure but again he must be filing long form. More than likly he does have enough deductions to file that way unless he owns a home.

BallBoutique Dec 06, 2003 06:28 PM

You maybe correct but any loss under the C schedule is a loss [deduction] on the long form.

I do own my 2000 sq foot house (paid for) with plenty of room for the project to grow. Keeping, breeding, and selling all species of pythons is perfectly legal in the city, county, and state (Arizona is a little picky about our native reptiles, but I'm well versed in those laws as well). I'll look into getting a business license for this year so I can show this year's expenses, and I like the idea of having been "in business" for a few years before selling anything I produce. Thanks again for all your inputs. I hope this isn't too far down in the forum for you to see. I think I'll post a new message thanking you guys again.

Good for you for sticking to your principles regarding the cashiers check.

This is a scam that has been around in other businesses too. It goes like this: I only have a check for $9500, would you mind sending me the change or I mistakenly sent you the wrong check, or my wife sent you someone else's check, etc.

There have been a lot of overseas scams operating off this same line of thought. They'll want to order a large amount of stock items and want to pay for it with an electronic transfer of funds. Well, this requires that you supply them with an account number, NOT A GOOD IDEA.

DO NOT EVER give your checking account numbers, ID information, social security numbers, drivers license, date of birth, etc. This is how identity theft happens.

If it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is. We as business people want to trust those buying from us, but trust only goes so far then common sense has to take over. You need ask yourself, when does this ever happen anytime else. When does someone give you a check for way over the amount and trust you'll take care of their money. Answer: NOT EVER.

I'm glad you posted this for all to see. Hopefully your post will educate sellers and stop some of the scams in the future.

How about we drop the $50G prices for the morphs, be reasonable ($250-$1000) and then there wouldn't be as much incentive to CHEAT.

This way everyone wins... breeders don't get scammed, and BP enthisiats get their dreams come true...

Personally I consider my norms as two of the best I have ever seen, but I wouldn't mind a few morphs in my collection...

P.S. Sorry the fool tried to rob you. Good luck with the FBI

How is that? What about the thousands of people that ALREADY spent $10,000 on a morph? How do they "win"? Do they go back to the breeder and get reimbursed 90% of the cost of the animal(s)? LOL, ok then....

Its not about winning or losing. Its about enjoying a great hobby, ALL aspects of it. If you like high-dollar morphs and working with them, then do so. If you think your two normals blow up your skirt more than any morph ever will, then great on you! No reason that everybody should be in the same boat in the BP world. Some people have poured 100x more work and ALL their capital-worth into BP projects/investments. They should be rewarded. For sure.

However, Bumblebees and Platties for $500 sounds damn nice right around now!! LOL!! JK

"Some people have poured 100x more work and ALL their capital-worth into BP projects/investments. They should be rewarded."

If only life (and economic systems) were so fair! However, the situation you are describing far exceeds the status of “hobby.” These “investments” are better termed “speculation.” And just like with the stock market or any other speculative use of resources, anyone who would have “ALL their capital-worth” tied up in one such “investment” could probably use some financial counseling. And should also be prepared to lose every penny.

Maintaining price points is surely to be desired. But in the scenario you just described, having a second job and a working spouse are probably more important.

But what other industry in the world can you invest $10,000, other than drugs or money-laundering, and make back 2,000% in 12 months?

I would say none. If I were to buy a bond at 5% interest, it would take me well over 350 years to make 2,000% interest!

I'll stick with snakes.
