rat shortage...

ginevive Dec 05, 2003 12:47 PM

I was just at mice-on-ice . com, and they were talking about a current national shortage in mice and rats, due to the fact that more people are getting into the reptile hobby. Also, at all the pet stores in my area, no one has rats and only a few have live mice.
I feed my male BP fresh-killed rats, because he always refused the f/t ones, even the fresh ones that didn't have freezerburn. Now, I can't find any rats around here, and all the sites I have gone to have a minimum of 100 pieces per order. I only need a few! Luckily, my male is in shed now, but he'll be starving when he comes out of it. Please help!
On a side note, would it be OK for him if I used a hamster for his next feeding? There's no shortage of those around here, and the ones I have seen are as big as some of the rats he's eaten. Thanks!

I should add; in my post, it sounded kinda like the pet stores near me never had mice/rats. This is untrue; up until a few weeks ago, there was an abundant supply. Now they say that they have been unable to get any in. dammit

Wow~ And I practically gave away a mess of rats a couple weeks ago! Sold them off for about what they cost me to produce (Thanks Steven and Rose! The extra freezer space is sure appreciated at the holiday here!) And they are building up on me again! If there really is a shortage, it shouldn't last long. Rats and Mice breed like........well.........like rats and mice. Increasing production is not difficult.

I don't think I would resort to feeding a hamster.......that will get mighty expensive in short order if the snake decides he prefers them. Shop around.......someone has rats I'm sure. You may not be able to purchase a bakers dozen, but you should be able to get a rat or two to hold you over. Check in the "Fancy Rat" section at the pet store.....only difference between a feeder and a fancy is who is breeding it. I have a lot of beautiful feeder rats myself!
