Egg Eating

tak Jun 02, 2003 12:47 PM

I definitely don't visit here as often as I should, but judging by the commotion made early this spring, my bull snakes should have mated. I'm so far behind in my learning, but I have a worry. If bull snakes eat eggs, could the male eat the eggs of the female? Should I separate them? They both have grown nicely in the last two years and the females skin was two inches short of eight feet this spring. I wonder how long she really is? I hope someone will comment on a eating! Thank you,

Well I don't know if he would eat the eggs or not but I would not chance it.This is my first year breeding and I did alot of reading and got some exlent addvice from others on this fourm. What I did is if you think they mated whan she starts to go into her next shed seperate them, this will be less stress on her and no chance of egg eating.Put a rubber maid or of such continer in her cage with damp moss or vermiculite in it make sure its big enough for her to go in in a hole cut inthe top and theres enough room for her to lay eggs.keep if damp but not wet.My two bulls laid about 11/2 to 2 weeks after there shed. This is only my experence but it worked,P-RAT

The male will not eat the eggs however by leaving the male in with her, you greatly increase the chance that (1) she will be stressed out and deposit the eggs in a non-suitable location and/or (2) that the male will crawl over the eggs and damage them. If your snakes have bred and your female is gravid, you should get the male out of there. Provide her with a moist laying box (I use a 1:1 mixture by weight of milled peat/sand and water) and after her pre-lay shed, remove the water dish and only provide water briefly every day or two.
If you want any other info, feel freee to email.
