got a big gal

carrotfairy Jun 02, 2003 12:54 PM

my father-in-law hates the turtles in his pond and pretty much plans on trying to "evacuate them" in whatever means possible. saturday i got a red eared slider from his pond. she had been up on the bank laying eggs and i waited....and waited...and then waited some more. ugh! took a long time
anyway, i've got her home and plan on keeping her outdoors all summer and then bringing her indoors when the weather gets cooler. i'm in oklahoma so it gets plenty hot here.
i've got some questions... (btw...she's pretty big. 7" i would say)

here is my setup for outdoors.

i have a rock garden and just finished putting a 90 gallon pond in. it has a great filter with a great turnover rate. there's lots of soil around the pond and i think she will love it. not as much as her old home...but better than getting trapped..right?

what will she eat?
what kind of barrier should i put up so she won't escape?
what kind of shelter? hide box etc???
what do i need for the pond water? (as in conditioners and dechlorintors)
her area with the pond is about 64 square feet.....big enough?
also, if you all have any opinions or tips i would appreciate
hearing them.....

sorry this was so long

amy

As for the food she will eat you can feed her pellets and stock the pond with goldfish.

For the pond setup you should check in some books...they will tell you exactly how to set it up. I'll check and right some more later.
