I think my lizards gone blind!

samson Dec 05, 2003 02:33 PM

WEll after bruminating for a month, i figured it was time to wake up dc, i moved him back into his cage (from the tank in the closet where he was bruminating under a coconut shell undisturbed)after a half-week of having just the lights on, I started turning on the heat gradually, Today im at almost normal temperature, hes had water everyday (ive offered it twice a day since the day i took him out of brumination).
Today i offered wax worms, and he didnt go after any, didnt notice them at all, I figure it might have been no appetite due to temperature, but when I went to offer him water I noticed that his eyes were "crusted", I really dont know how to describe it, it looks like a mass of sand or more like a smooth scab inside his eyelids over his eye, i hadnt noticed before them there before, but it looks like hes blinking and trying to get it out, ive tried a bath, and it hasnt helped yet, im going to give another try later. Today, its snowing, so im stranded with no way to a vet until it stops snowing and they plow the roads.
Has anyone had this happen? I cant imagine this being normal.
Anyones help would be greatly appreciated.
-Joe

having them closed for so long, or could be like an eye infection, like people get(conjunctivitis) kinda thing.
Before I'd get super concerned, I would try and swab them with warm water and Q-tip and see if the sandy stuff comes off and looks better.

If it persists and gets worse after you try that, then see a Vet.
His eyes are important !!! Hope they are just a bit stuck shut and the warm water helps. Good Luck let us know how he is, Eve

well after the bath, the grittyness came off, but it still looks like a smooth scab over his eye (inside the eyelids)
im going to a vet as soon as possible, but that will probably not be until next monday

went to the vet.. nothing but bad news

vet says somehow his eyes have dried out from the inside, either through a bacterial infection or someother means, and that its not likely that he will regain sight at all. Also, in the last 4 days (since friday) hes stopped drinking, and looks like someones sucking the water out of him.
Hes begun to shed now,(hopefully thats why he stopped drinking) and looks pitiful.
The vet reccomended i put him down, as he will have to live by me force feeding him for the remainder of his life if he dosent regain his sight.
I think the vet might be right, but im gonig to give him a month, if he dosent regain his sight or if i cant get him to eat without me force feeding him, I think i might have to put him down.
a very sad

...if they could be 'mites', since I bring up mites every chance I get LOL. Seriously, if you have a good magnifying glass, check what is around the eye, as some mites DO go for the eyes.
