there's a fru-fru in the herp room

karosenberg Dec 05, 2003 02:50 PM

I have 4 juviniles that don't seem to be growing very fast. They are all Sept. hatchlings and only wiigh in at 11-15 grams. They really don't seem excited about eating, but they do eat a mealie and a few waxys every day. Should I worry about their weight, or do they spurt up at four months? Also, do poeple really feed those "aliens" to their leos? YUCK!!!

I missed the post on what exactly a fru fru was, and by "aliens" I am guessing you are referring to silkworms? If so, I feed them to all my (insectivorous) lizards, however, my leos sometimes just look at them like "what the hell is that?!" 2 of my 4 seem to really like them though. If I am way off topic here, just ignore this, lol...

A fru-fru is a frilly morph, the term was coined by Monte, powergeckos, (as far as I know). I think the "aliens" are the second step of metamorphasis of mealworms. I don't understand how the subject was relavent to the post.

Well sit right down my wicked son
And let me tell you a story
About the boy who fell from glory
And how he was a wicked son

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am with my hand

He took his sister from his head
And then painted her on the sheets
And then rolled her up in grass and trees
And they kissed 'till they were dead

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am, with my hand

Well sit right down my evil son
And let me tell you a story
About the boy who fell from glory
And how he was a wicked son

This ain't no holiday
But it always turns out this way
Here I am, with my hand

I took a look at your pic's- I have never seen a hammock in a leo enclosure! Do they use it often- is it under the basking lamp? Aliens are mealworms that 'evolve' into really creepy pupated squirmy things... Cool Leo's Oh yeah, a Fru-Fru is a color morph like a super hypo carrot tail or such.

My Leos love their hammocks. I have it on the warm end of the tank just above their cave but not right under the light. They will often come out during the day and lay there.

Yea, they love it. They like hiding under it too. It gives them something extra to lounge on or climb on.

>>I have 4 juviniles that don't seem to be growing very fast. They are all Sept. hatchlings and only wiigh in at 11-15 grams.

I wouldn't be too worrried about that weight if they were eating more. Have you double-checked your environment? I mean, are the temps and everything correct? Are they housed individually or together? With any other herps? They'll have the best growth rates if raised alone, and should never be kept with other herps.

>>They really don't seem excited about eating, but they do eat a mealie and a few waxys every day. Should I worry about their weight, or do they spurt up at four months?

Different leos grow at different rates. Have you tried crickets with them? I wouldn't have started them on waxworms until they started eating a lot regularly, but if they're not eating many mealworms, try some crickets. Once they get more established, then switch back to mealworms. I always start my babies on 1/4 inch crickets until they start putting on weight because sometimes they really need the movement to excite them into hunting/eating. Once they're well established, I switch them over to mealies, but sometimes have to keep w/the crickets for a few more days/weeks and try the mealworms again later.

>>Also, do poeple really feed those "aliens" to their leos? YUCK!!!

No, I remove the 'aliens' and put them into the beetle drawer. I only feed the worms to my geckos.

Good luck

What term?

I feed my leos mealies in all stages of life. They like the aliens, which are soft-bodied & they like the beetles, which are crunchy.
