Preferred feeding method for large enclosures?

emarks Dec 05, 2003 06:24 PM

When I moved my 1 yr old male simbhava to his new 3'x3'x4' reptairium, I soon found I could no longer just let the crickets roam around the enclosure as I did with his starter cage, The crickets just jump to the floor of the enclosure and hide under the plant pots. I've had to feed him out of a hand held clear quart container. I can support this type of container in the enclosure with a clip when feeding worms. Crickets on the other hand just jump out one by one. I'm sure many of you have a similar set up. Whats are some alternative solutions? Thanks EM

I use tuperware containers to feed mine. I put the crickets in with a little gut load and lay the lid over it while I mist them then I take the lid off. By then the crickets have found the gutload and they dont jump around.

My bird wanted to type and when the second largest breed of macaw wants to play on your computer you dont say no. Anyway I use a round medium size container about 2 inches high. I place it half way up his cage a little under a large vine where they can sit and eat. hope this helps.

don't the crickets jump out? when feeding adult crickets to my panther they jump out of an 8 inch high container?

i have no problems with my crickets jumping out....

crickets are to stupid to attempt to jump out. they just do it when wind hits them or for random occasions. i have them in a 2 inch bottom part of a water bottle and just attach that to a stick...

do make sure to tape the edges of the cut part... dont want to hurt your beautiful chameleon!!!!!!

I have one or 2 jump out (gives the cham something to hunt) but the rest stay in because they have food in there. Food and covering them for a min. is the trick. I feed full size crickets too and no problems.

I use the bottom of my wifes water container. I cut them down and leave about 2-3 inches. I hang them from biovine near the light (they love heat) and they move around the bottom. Occasionally they hop but not out.
My cage bottom is bare with only a rubber to catch water.

EM-

In my outdoor cages I use feeder stations that Bill Strand wrote about in the chameleon E-zine. You can view the article HERE. I use these because the screen on the outdoor cages is 1/2" PVC coated hardware cloth which will not hold feeders in, they would just go right through the screen. Hope this helps!
