is this necessary

is it necessary to have a heat rock with leopard geckos?

heat rocks are not a good idea- especially with geckos. Geckos can burn off their toes and burn their stomach. They don't understand the idea of "oh, this is getting too hot, maybe I should move..." Get an under tank heater instead. They stick to the bottom of the cage and warm it under the carpet.

Oh, yeah. Leo's are a desert species from asia- they like it pretty dry in their cages- except fot the moist hide which is necessary for them to shed correctly.

what about foggers?

karosenberg Dec 05, 2003 08:36 PM

Foggers are great for the amphibians, leos would probably just be confused and a little stressed. Also did you understand the decimal thingy? they are listed as Male . Female . Unsexed so a male and two females would be 1.2 or 1.2.0
Do you have a leo yet, or are you just gathering info?

That sounds good
you can get repticarpet-green astroturf stuff- at PetCo, PetSmart, etc. Use a Zoo Med or the like UVA/UVB lighting it comes in both a bulb and a long bulb for fixtures - you need one basking heat lamp- a red earth- or rare earth doesn't give off light so it won't affect gecko routine. You also could use the black lights-meant for reptiles.
Many people use a temperature probe to make sure that there is a constant temperature on the high and low ends of the tank- temp affects everything from the mood to the color to the eating and health og the gecko. Make sure to have a high temp in one corner of around 90 and a coolor end of about 80.
When it comes to buying supplies try out the online guys like LLL supplies and the such. And when it comes to geckos- go through and check out the websites of some of the greats- Albey's too cool reptiles

All the ones listed at the breeder section of kingsnake are great!!! Be careful when buying from the classifieds section- if they have a website posted take a look at their breeders.... Ok, sorry so long!

An Under the tank heater will provide plenty of heat. You don't need a basking bulb with an UTH.

As for bulbs, I'd recommend a standard light bulb. This will raise the ambient (air) temp in your enclosure and provide a day/night schedule for your leo. You don't need a powerful bulb. Just figure out what size bulb you need to get the air temp right. A standard household bulb would probably work fine. You don't need ANY UV lighting.

For the other bulb, consider a night bulb. A red/black night bulb that you can find at a pet store. You can have it on at night and watch your pet while she's active. Leo's supposedly can't see the light coming off red night bulbs.

Foggers will make the entire cage too humid. This can lead to respiratory problems in leopard geckos. Fogger should only be used for reptiles that require high humidity, and the same thing goes for waterfalls. Hope this helps, good luck!

nasr_36 Dec 05, 2003 09:03 PM

Ultrasonic foggers are not good for anything, whether it will be amphibians or reptiles imo. IT will break down in a few weeks anyway as the transducer plate currodes with material (unless using RO or very good water source). They also give a NASTY shock when touched, and will heat the water to high temps. Besides, leos are not a tropical species as mentioned.

Its better to just make your own fogger by using pvc piping and household humidifers, but that is another discussion.

Hope this helps,
M.N
