Russian as a pet?

Passport Dec 05, 2003 09:39 PM

I have a friend who is considering becoming a first time tortoise owner/mommy. She loves my tortoises but thinks maybe something smaller than my variety would be easier to raise and care for. The Russian seems to be the right size. What kind of personalities do they have? Do they get acquainted with their keeper show cuteness or personality? I'm asking because I would like to give her a tortoise as a gift this Christmas. I read that the males stay smaller than the females. Is that correct? Would a single male Russian fill the bill for someone who wanted a small tortoise to experience? If not, what might be a better choice? Thanks.

Hi,
I have a male Russian tort, who had been mistreated by his original owner. I have had him for 2 months, and he is the sweetest tort! Russian males are smaller than females...my guy has a shell length of 5" and I believe he is full grown. Russian torts are one of the most active torts, or so I hear. I know my little guy loves to come out and "run" every day. Once spring comes I'll build him an outdoor pen. I also read that Russians are one of the best "beginner" torts as they are hardier than other species. Russiantortoise.org has alot of info on russians. I had never had a tortoise before I got this guy, so I can't compare. But I know that mine loves to come out, and lets me pet him all over - he especially loves his head rubbed So, I would say, as long as she has a large enough enlosure (my guy's in a 4'x2' wood enclosure) that isn't see-through (as I've heard that Russian torts can kill themselves by banging up against the glass in frustration trying to get out) with proper lighting than a Russian makes a wonderful first time tort They are also very cute!

Thank you, that is exactly the kind of information that I am looking for. Your little guy is a real cutie. Seems to me that this species would be a good first choice.

I love my little Russian, Molly. I think she is about 3-4 years old from her size but I've only had her a few weeks. She is very personable. She sticks her little head out to let me rub it when I pick her up from her pen and eats from my hand. She is wonderful. But the upkeep can get expensive and (Lord willing) will be very very long term... As I am sure you know from your own torts.
