1000 gram bearded dragon

CheriS Dec 05, 2003 10:31 PM

This is Zookie, he is 24 inches, with a tail nip that is probably another 2 inches off and he weighs 1009 grams, he is not fat either... there are no fat deposits under his arms, chest or abdomen and very little in his beard area.

As large as he is, he is still a very calm, laid back boy, very healthy, gentle and loves people.

Here he is, not very happy with me for waking him to take a picture as you can see, he does turn dark and is about to shed on his body, but this is the best one I had for showing his size, the log he is on is huge and 30 inches long... we just moved him tonight into his new enclosure, but he was housed temp in a reptarium you see here, til we got his Neodesha in and set up with lights.

Geez!! He's a monster! What a beauty. How old is he? How long have you had him?

I'm Stacey, by the way. I am new to the forum.

if things work out after his quarantine, you can have one of his offsprings if he has any

He have Sandy that is GG and 3 years old next spring, and also Sherbert that is GG, but she is only 1 year old now. Both of their fathers were 24 inches and it looks like Sherbert will end up larger than Sandy and Sherbert is VERY gold

Here is Sherbert at 9 months playingin her new sandbox

I think Sandy is using that on me too!!

She would wind up our poor Arnie last year like crazy and when he got close to her she would bop him over the head or pounce on him!!!! poor guy was a wreck!

She better be a little more impressed this year, as there are two nice males she can torment now.

Sandy was bigger than Arnie, so that may have been a problem, but I don't think she will ever get bigger than Zookie..... LOL! I did want babies from Arnie, with that great irridescent scales that are opal color... but..we will see.

What a monster Cheri!! Why would you be looking for another huge male to breed to your female when you have such a big boy like that there hiding out? All the times we've talked about large males you never brought him up you always talked about some 24 inch 800 gram dragon that some breeder brings to Daytona with them. Great dragon Cheri I hope he gets one of your large females for the spring

He was most likely the one we talked about that was 800 grams and 24 inches to begin with LOL . I thought you had that giant for a while. Super you got him!! He's the largest I've ever seen ecspesially with that 2-3 inches taken off the tail. Should go great with that big female you have. God, with all the breeders breeding such great dragons. I'm going to need to move at the end of the summer to a bigger place I love the colors of many, but I love the large big healthy GG crossed dragons just as much. Cheri by the way Meg is infact without any shadow of a doubt MALE!!! He is doing fantastic and is 85 grams today a huge growth from the 10/23 when she arrived at 22 grams God, and her colors are just awesome. This dragon is amogst my favorites here. With all the high orange, and Pastels this normal import with such great increasing color is awesome. I love the patterns. I'll post a pic sometime today.

or maybe she will be called Meg? LOL, but here we call her Meg's Sis or Sissy. She's 40 grams now and a little butterball..... she certainly is making up for lost time and meals!

Zookie(pictured above) is a big sweet boy and we just got him, I still have our other big male GG, Arnie. But this guy makes him look like a rankin!

We suspect that he may be a sibling to the 800 gram/24 inch male I told you about that we see in Daytona, they come from the same city about the same time, but we have not been able to confirm it yet.

We had talked to Zookie owner several months ago about taken him in the future, but it did not work out then. She bought him in 2000 from The Reptile House in Chicago. We know that he came from a clutch they purchased from a breeder in St Petersburg and that he was hatched March 15th. The opportunity to get him came up again last week, so he has a new home with us.

He has been very well taken care of and I could not be more pleased with him. He is such a big softy and just loves to be held and petted, its so cute, he even moves his left arm petting us back.

Great idea LOL I'll call her Meg instead I'm so stuck on that name.. I can't even think of a new name to call this male other then just Meg. Maybe it will get easier once I get the other Meg or I'll just get super confused and call them both Meg1 & Meg2 or Meg with a penis HA Anyway, I'm glad you got that big male you had wanted. He sure fits the bill to match up your other large female with. He would be a great male to breed to one of the imports when they get of age. Your right in what you said in your oiriganal post Zookie really doesen't have the large fat stores in the chin and under arms that many heavy weights have. I could imagine how he's going to be in a year with all the good food and spoiling he's going to get with you.

green, white or yellow... he does not seem to like orange. HE seems to be pretty much a vegetarian. We went over his past diet and its been that and some superworms/ I asked is he ever had any pinkies. She siad they got him one for Chistmas one year, he looked at it... but when it made a sound he ran and hide and would not come out til it was removed.

He really is a very gentle giant.. thank heavens.... could you imagine one this size that was mean!!! OMG, Axe and I would both be running! His gentlness with that size is what suprises me so much, he is more like a baby than our babies!

CheriS Dec 06, 2003 10:52 AM

I think that it is their genetics (GG are large boned) in combination with light intensity, good UVB and good diet. Our adults do not get much protien, mostly salads.... they just have very good appetites. We exercise them a lot also, so I think that helps, most like to swim and they get a lot of pool time. Those that don't get running around time inside or outside and that I think stimulates their eating.

GG have been my favorites from when I started with dragons, I just love the gold colors on them, the stocky builds and they are so hearty health wise with easy going attitutes. They tend to be very calm dragons and good with people.

My little Lenny is stucked at 14,5 inches (he was in very poor condition when I got him). I'd love to have a BIG dragon. But I recently got a little female and she's growing like weed, who knows...? However, I have to say Lenny is the sweetest dragon in the world (sorry for all of you)
