OT, sorry but I need a quick answer about a ball python and the jerks over there

wideglide Dec 05, 2003 10:37 PM

only seem to be interested in answering questions that pertain to anything over $10,000.

My ball python just shed. I've read the new skin can be somewhat delicate and was wondering if it would be a problem to feed her right away. She just finished sometime last night.

Again, I'm sorry this isn't about dragons but sometimes that forum sucks and I really need an answer.

Thanks!!!!

the skin is soft and expands well and they usually are hungry... unless its a pre egg laying shed.

I have several dozen snakes presently but no ball pythons. It has been my expeirience that they generally prefer not to eat untill several days after finishing a shed. There is no problem if they eat right away however. I have a few pigs who eat even during shed. This time of year, they may be less tempted to eat as it is cooler weather.

her from f/t mice to f/t trats and I understand that can be a tedious adventure! Perfect timing for me to gain some more experience with snakes feeding behaviors. I like to add as many variables as I can to become as confused as possible . Sheesh!

You might already know this... but... You can rub the rat with a mouse (or mouse cage shavings) OR you can be really brave and do what my hubby has been doing lately and feeding a small mouse to get her started and then follow it with a f/t rat. When she gets down to the tail of the mouse ease the rats nose in right after it. She'll just think it's a really long mouse. This might also get her used to the taste/smell of the rat. Some shyer snakes won't like this hands on approach, but several of our breeder females are getting this treatment right now and don't mind at all.

Good Luck!!

It's fine to feed them right after a shed. Mine are usually very hungry at that time! They usually won't eay DURING the shed (when their eyes are opaque, their skin cloudy). Although a few of my more enthusiastic eaters will! (One of my red tails ate before the skin was all the way off! Silly girl!).

Anyway, it's fine!
