A warning on poor quality food

NIkkiT Dec 06, 2003 07:37 AM

As I mentioned on thursday, one of my leo's died that day, and another seems sick.

Well we just got back form the vet. Oscar seems to have a pneumonia type thing and also an ulcerated eye. These are the exact symptoms Perkin showed before passing away. Oscar has been given a strong antibiotic stuff (using a thin tube to get it into stomach), and I have some ointment for the eye.

But, the vet said that by the time the symptoms show in this kind if thing, it is often too late. We just have to wait and see.

I need to keep oscar warm and try and get her eating some how.

But he did also agree with me that it could have come from the food I've been buying for last 6 weeks from a local pet shop. Its not seemed the highest quality, but due to circumstances, was the best I could get. I guess I'm being taught a very strong lesson here.

So not feeling very happy. And very very worried about Oscar.

Nikki

Oh, for cryin out loud, you just can't cut a break here can ya? Were those guys the only two leos you have? If so I'd say you need to cheer up by looking around for a new little guy or two- not to replace your babies but to bring some positive leopard gecko experiences back into your life... You can still mourn for your gecko, and have fun with a new one at the same time...

Thanks for you reply.

I also have Pootle, who is showing no symptoms luckily. She was a clutchmate of Perkin, but was brain damaged so was going to be euthanised, so I took her also.. she's lovely.

Oscar was my first though, and I've had her 5 years. I just feel so sad about it all.

Thanks

I am so sorry you have to go through this. It is a tragedy to loose your pets to something that cannot be identified. Some people may remember that about 3-1/2 years ago I lost 17 Leopard Geckos to mycotoxic poisoning crickets that were cultured on moldy corn-based food. Also, last February-March I had a serious problem with bacterial infections that could not be identified until I took some crickets fresh out of the box to a lab for testing. I found that they were loaded with 4 types of bacteria that were harmful.

Are you getting your crickets delivered, or buying them from a retail store? If from a store, can you find out where they get their cricket stock? Please e-mail me with the name of the cricket supplier. I will treat this confidentially.

Hi,

Its good to see a name I remember from my times here before.

I remember you losing your leo's.. that must have been heartbreaking.

I've been buying just from a local pet store, a small place that's never impressed me hugely, but circumstances were such I had little choice.. I had been buying online, but debts forced me to give up credit card, and I also suffer badly from Agorophobia, so am not able to travel the hour on public transport to the other place. I'm kicking myself now.

I'm in the UK.. and had been using Livefoods.co.uk who are very good, and I would highly reccomend them. But I'll be speaking to the pet shop I changed to on Monday to find out their supplier.

I've included a photo of Oscar that I took yesterday, of him exploring my laptop!

Thanks for the support

Good luck with everything.

Are there any fish bait stores you could go to instead of petstores?
