Heating/Behavior Questions

PEACHES123 Dec 06, 2003 11:16 AM

Ive posted a couple of times already and Im looking for as much feedback as possible. I got 2 new leos on wednesday who still wont eat. I understand this is normal. Im concerned about behavior tho. They spend all their time in the "cool" hide which is about 75 degrees. The warm side is 84 degrees. The thing is they are in a 10 gallon tank with a 100w bulb and im wondering if maybe it is even hotter then my thermometers tell me. testing this theory i tried taking the temps with a diff therm and I still get 84 and 75. If this is true why do they spend day and night in the cool hide? Does it sound right that a 10 gallon with 100w would only get up to 85 degrees? I just want to give them the best care possible..thanks for your feedback in advance!

your geckos are rather cool. they need to be 90 on the warm end. the reason it is only 84 with a 100 watt bulb is because the ambient room temp is 65.... you would be better off with an under the tank heater.. controled by a thermostat. why they are hanging out in the cool hide? i do not know, it may depend on how you have your tank set up and they feel safer over there. do you have humid hides on both sides? do you have normal hide boxes on both sides? any rocks, plants or branches that may be around the cool hide that makes them feel more secure?
also they maybe hanging out on the cool side (dark side) if your using a white lite because leos are nocturnal animals.

the tank is set up with 2 identical hides on either side and there is a UTH on the warm side. There is nothing by the cool hide that would make them feel any safer then if on the warm side. since 100w only heats it to 85 should i get a 150? That seems an awful lot for a 10 gallon tank. I want to get one of those basking spot lights but you cant put those in the double bulb canopy can you? Anyone recommend certain brand bulb or thermostat for 10 gallon tanks.

put space heater in my room temps are now 90 on warm end and 78 on cool end. Still hiding on cool side of tank.

Where did you get it from?

I wouldnt be too concerned right now. Continue with your regular bulb. 100W over a 10g is overkill.

My leo tank is 75 on the warm side, and their healthy as ever. Their just in a bit of a brumation due to the temps. Leos are nocturnal anyway, so you wont really know how they behave at night. (Maybe it goes on the warm side at nightime?).

There is really nothing to be concerned about right now, unless it continues to not eat.

Good luck,
M.N

Hey

Heres what a reccomend turn your house thermostat up to 75*

Ditch the 100watt crazy hardcore light jank lol

find the temp of the bottom of the tank were the uth is at reptiles absorb heat throught there body to digest food items if the uth is not hot enought after the heats come throught the glass then your leo may not be eating cause it knows theres not the kinda nocturnal heat for food digestion it needs the glass on the warm side should be 88-90* the hide on the warm side should be 85-87* if your gonna have a light get some thing small like a nocturnal 15-25w red or purple and leave it on at night just so you can look at the little guys.

Hope I helped
Aaron

my dad wont let me touch the thermostat in the house...that is why i use a space heater. not sure if this was wrong but i took out the hide on the cool end and theyve been hanging out in the warm hide now and they each had their first bowel movement. still not eating the mealies but tomorrow once all the roads are plowed i will try crix.
