What's the difference between.....Coastal, Irian, and Carpet Pythons????

Alan Dec 06, 2003 11:30 AM

Stupid questions perhaps, but curious --- what is the difference
between Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons, Coastal Carpet Pythons, and Carpet Pythons? Locale??????? Is this the only thing that differs these snakes from one another?

Thanks,
Alan

Coastals, Also referred to as Queensland. Are the most common and are less pricey for the most part, tend to be green and the biggest carpet. Irans have a redish tint and don't grow as big. Are breedable at 18 months unlike any other carpet, more aboreal. As for carpet pythons...well which carpets? Jaguar carpet? Centralian? Diamond? Inland? red phase? darwins? 50/50? Jungles? Be a bit more specific on the "carpet part" please. Hope this helps a little.

Oh boy! Well lets try to unravel this one as much as possible for you but just to warn you this is not a simple question to sat the least!

Ok, so lets get the easy stuff outta the way! Diamonds, Bredli and Iran Jayas are the only local specific carpets outside of Australia in any large numbers. Diamonds because they have been their own genius since they were imported from Down Under. Bedli and IJ have only just recently been available so more is known about their backgrounds and keepers have tried to keep good record from the very get go.

Alright, now for FUN part! THE DIFFRENCE BETWEEN JUNGLES AND CARPETS...Well, it’s basically down to color and pattern. (There are other theories but for the sake of keeping things simple I'm not going into them. if your curious you can look them up yourself.) For several decades they shared the same genus and there was a lot of cross breeding. Today there are only a handful of animals with trace-able backgrounds here in the US.

Ok now Coastal Carpets. You'd think this would be easy but its not. The reason being there are more variations in coastals than in any other sub type of carpet. Also the term 'coastal' is also used as a dump off title for carpets that don't fall under any of the other genus' characteristics. They also can be called Queensland carpets. To confuse things there is one strain of Coastal that has specific color and patterns. They have Light tan bodies with wide gray/tan markings, banded by thin black lines. These carpets are referred to as Coastals too but they're different than the 'mutt coastals' we all know and love. Also you have Jaguar and Tiger carpets which are both coastal pattern morphs, just to name a few...

Sizes and patterns:
Diamond Carpet- (?)5-7ft, Mostly black with white and or yellow rosettes across body
Bredli Carpet- (?)5-7ft, Tan with rust and thin black banding
Iran Jaya Carpet- 4-5ft, Tan with black banding. Some types have jungle type look; others have yellow or orange color within banding areas.
Jungle Carpet- 4-6ft, Yellow with black banding
Coastal Carpet- 6-8ft, anything in between and beyond!

Hope this helps,

Darci
