Bacardi Zyke Is dead

Heather Dec 06, 2003 01:13 PM

I don't know what happened. He's on my knee right now. He was fine. He slowed way down in his eatting but I thought it was because He was burmating. I had had a fecal done on Him, Blood work done on Him. He was perfect. In perfect condition. Then all the sudden He stopped eating. I thought He was going down for the winter. I thought it was ok. Last week He nibbled on some salad. A couple days ago He ate a few cickets. This morning his eyes were all sunken in. I dripped some water on his nose trying to get him to drink, He did. Tried getting a couple leaves into him and He started thrashing and throwing up. Put him into a warm bath. Started thrashing and throwing up in there. His eyes got fixated. Put him under his MVB trying to keep him warm. He would just slid himself off and half close his eyes. Keep trying to keep him on His rock. Went to check on him again and He was gone. Gonna have a necropsy done. Have 5 other dragons to worry about now. I have no idea what happened. Nothing had change in his house, nothing changed in his diet. He was only 3 and a half years old. I adopted Him this past june. Waited Six months to get him and now He's gone. I don't know why. I don't know what I did. But Now He's dead. My beautiful Orange Glow boy is dead.

Aww man how devastating that is. I'm so sorry for your loss Heather. I know I would be just so upset if I lost one of my guys. Hang in there hun, and please share any results you get back from the vet, it could help others. Brumation is such a very strange and scary time to begin with... I'm Very sorry you lost him.

I know others that have lost dragons fast with no indicators except for they thought it was brumation...... it scare people for them to brumate them, but all that had them checked did find a reason that was unrelated to the brumation.

Starting to really worry it might have been adenovirus.... I hear there is a doctor that specializes in the field of adenovirus.... Someone told me I should look into trying to get the doctor do His necropsy... Anyone know where I can find this doctor and how to contact them? I have several other reptiles (see my signature) all of which had contact with him..... I can only hope it wasn't Adeno... If it was Next year will be much harder then this year was....

he will help with fecal test for adenovirus in living dragons, to see if they are infected. As far as I know, he request owners to contact the University of Kansas to do the necropsy. I know they have the less expensive necropsy changes as they do sections, but you may have to have your local vet prep for that.

Call and talk to them. I think the section charges were $40 and they usually only need the liver section to confirm it.

BUT.. if it is not that, you have to do more test.

How awful. Please do let us know what the problem was. He was a male for sure , right? I'm asking because a dragon I sold to someone acted the same way before a lone egg burst inside of her. We still know so little about these guys and what can cause their demise.
It's a sad day.....I feel for you.

Definately male. "Proven" breeder. I'm not gonna get into My theories or use names yet. The person I adopted Him from comes to this forum on occasion. I have no desire to start anything. They may not have been aware of any problem of Adenovirus He might have had. But Now two reptile collections are in jepordy. Mine and someone else who acted as a medium to get Bacardi to Me. They also got an animal from the person who adopted Him to me. Actually, they got an animal and several eggs sired by Bacardi. All the eggs died before or after hatching. The Female they got also has a couple problems. Not going to get into any detail due to the fact that there is no proof of anything yet. IF it was adenovirus, then I will make my thoughts known. Till then, I'll bite my tounge. Another factor, as I said, I adopted Him back in June. His original owner got Him from Weis Reptiles... I very much appreciate the thoughts and caring you guys have shown. Thanks for the "hugs" and words.

I can't feel your loss. But from really trying to rehabilitate 3 babies and loosing the battle, I can feel some of it.

I truely hope that your other animals continue to do well and that no other loss is added to your heart and mind!!

Sorry again,

Heather,

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my Irwin about four months ago. He was eight years old so, I was blessed with more time than you had. I got him as a very neglected rescue when he was a year old and he was an amazing little guy. Not the prettiest beardie on the block due to his previous home, but a really funny personality.

When he got sick he went downhill really fast like your Zyke. On necropsy my veterinarian found a large liver tumor and the histopath report came back as adenocarcinoma (not realated to adenovirus). I hope you get some answers from your vet and some piece of mind knowing he had a great life for the short time he was here. Most beardies don't have it as good as I am sure yours do.
