Is the "classic jungle" trait genetic?

emroul Dec 06, 2003 04:33 PM

I just wanted to know if there were any proven lines out there for the Classic Jungle bp. (Not to be confused with the gorgeous Pastel Jungle, of course). Oh yeah, and if there is, is it Co-dom, simple recessive....? Thanks alot!

I think it has generally failed to prove genetic for those who have tried so far. However people keep trying and maybe some day a line will prove. I have heard of a few people who report to have animals that show some of the Classic Jungle traits (usually pattern) and have seen some tendency for it to show up in the babies but I haven't seen real good documentation on that.

Here is one I hatched last year from a normal looking 50% chance het stripe to a normal female. I’ll probably try breeding him next year just in case ...

how much did you pay for that het stripe? hope it will prove out next year.

The normal looking father of the classic jungle was one of the first possible het stripes I saw for sale and I was darn happy to get him for I think around $400 (can't remember exactly right now). I think they actually went up a little after that before coming back down this year.

I feel like a real dork for not breeding him again in 2003 but I already have 3 daughters out of him and I thought I needed all my adult females for other projects. Now I've had to sell my best three adult females (two big normals and a het albino) to fund yet another project so I'm short handed again and still not sure I'll get him bred this year unless his biggest daughter goes. Anyone have a nice clean fat normal female in Colorado that they want to split a 25% chance het stripe clutch on?

You better breed him...I really hope something proves with the jungles sooner or later. He is sweet.

Jennifer,
We are currently working with what we are HOPING to be "genetic jungles". After breeding this male with a female hoping for pos. het ghosts, we received ALL jungle babies. All 6 offspring look exactly like daddy, with spot on head, yellow eyes, mustaching and patterning. Take a look at the pics and tell me what you think. Daddy jungle is breeding now and we are in hopes to see more of the jungle babies. Next year we will be proving out the offspring to see if this in fact is a genetic jungle or not. If the genetics work out as they have so far, it would be co-dominant or dominant. Only time will tell, but in the mean time we have our fingers crossed.
*NOTE* Due to my "not so great photography skills" I couldn't capture the colors properly, as well as I couldn't capture the yellow in the daddy jungles eyes. He was also breeding and I did not want to disturb him to much. You can get an idea still from the photos.
