Your opinions on this new trend

Howdy,

Dont usually hang out here. In fact never really had an interest in monitors. I run a reptile rescue here in WI and as everyone knows, you run a rescue, you get iguanas, boas and they are usually all half dead.

Anyhow recently I have noticed a new animal popping up way too often for my taste. Are Savys becoming the new green iguana? I currently have two and got a call today from a shelter to pick up 3 more when I have room. Now these are not big old savys. They are both under 10 inches and the largest of the three I got the call on was 8 inchs. I dont really know where these guys are coming from in my area since I RARELY see them in pet stores. I really dont remember seeing any at tinley park. So why am I being suddenly flooded with these guys.

Are these the iguanas of the future?

This is nothing new. A better post would of been since when havent there been too many savs floating around??

I am suprised you havent seen them up your way more often. I am sure if you check the other rescues in your area they will tell you thats nothing new. Go to the Schaumburg swap lately???? There are usually a very large number of baby savs there.

There have always been Savs around in the rescues and for the 9 years that I've been doing rescue we've always had a Sav or two. But I'm seeing the same thing Cindy is in recent months. I'm currently caring for 5 Savs, the largest number that we've ever had at one time, and these are all better than 2 feet STL. Maybe it's the poor economy that has caused a sudden influx. People just can't afford to feed and heat them any longer. I know that if it weren't for some very kind folks that regularly donate insects and rodents to the rescue that I couldn't afford these monitors.

Thankfully I personally do not get much from the joy of streamwood. One thing in my favor is that we are pretty backwards in what we sell up here. Iguanas are still the leaders in stores. I honestly can NOT remember the last time i saw a savy for sale in a store! We have one small piddley reptile show that has sales. On the general whole big snakes and big iguanas are the leaders here in WI. I know the reason that I dont get a lot of stuff back from streamwood, but really cant say openly. I do get a lot of after calls to see what I have tho. Another thing is that I am one of the two area rescues here. We just got petcos in the area.

I am hoping that this is contained. Maybe because we are so backward in our pet trade up here that we wont get many in. I made a bunch of calls yesterday and called the majority of the area pet stores and all but one told me they didnt have savys. The one that did have a savy had a dump. Still have NO clue where they are coming from. Mind you 75% of the stores when asked DO have iguanas. Maybe this is just backlash of summer shows in the area. I can only hope.

Maybe I should be thankful that im sitting at 5 then. I know Jiffys numbers.

I am suprised you do not see more coming in. Even up in your area savs and niles have been coming over in very large numbers for quite sometime now.

Havent seen them at the stores. In fact the reptiles manager asked saturday if I thought they should get some in. They got a very firm HELL NO from me. I told them more leos. More beardies. More corns... More things I can place!!!

Over all I was disappointed in petco to be honest. Their reptile department is 1 aisle in most of the stores and occasionally 2 aisles. Their prices are obscene for dog stuffs. I have been keeping very close tabs on them because their iguana history isnt that great.
