Interested in Corn Snakes.

mrbfrog Dec 06, 2003 11:50 PM

I am very new to owning reptiles, I have had a Common Boa Constrictor for about 4 months now and I am enjoying it very much.
I am interested in getting another snake, and have been looking around. Corn snakes seem to be very pretty and there seems to be a huge variety in colors. I was wondering if they are entertaining snakes, are they amiable to being handled, and are they relatively easy to take care of? Like I said I have a boa and I have not had any problems but I do not want my next snake to get as big as he will get. Do corn snakes eat rats when they get bigger or do they just eat large mice?
Thank you all for your reply’s

corns max out at 5 feet MAYBE 6 at the MOST..theyre very easy to take care of and come in many buitiful colors..you can house an adult in a 20 gallon nicely..they are also active and in most cases dont mind being handled..

My first snake was a corn! They are very easy to care for. I house mine, I have 2, plus a milk and a jungle carpet python, in 20 gallon tanks with UTH and a light on for the day. The light also helps with keeping the tank warm. They have a couple of hiding places. Mine are very handable. "Janome" is a ghost and is the length of my arm. "Diamond" and amel is a bit shorter then that. I feed them F/T and they eat it with vigior. Haven't had any problems with them eating. Corns are THE best beginner snake in my opinion.

There is a local reptile suplier by my hose and he has some very pretty corn snakes. One that I was very taken with was an albino it is very pink and white. I was wondering if it will stay this way or will it turn yellow. because i really dont like the yellow albinos. I would apprecheate it if somesone had a good picture of an adult albino,

Check out south mountain reptiles web site cornsnake.net. It has pictures of about 40 different morphs. You may find something you like even more than the albino. Don Soderburg who owns this company is a super person to deal with if you decide to purchase on line.

My snow is about 4 feet right now, and she's eating 1 or two rat pups a week.(they have all their hair but are still being suckled by mama rat) I can't imagine she'll ever eat bigger than that, but she's only 3 years old, so who knows. Some corns never eat larger than adult mice, it just depends on the snake probably.

They are easier to care for than a boa I think, not that I have any experience with Boas. And the color variety is near endless. I don't have any adult amel pics, but the yellowing really depends on their genes. Some get a lot of yellow/orange and some get none. Candycanes are supposed to have the "whitest" ground color as adults. Look around at the sites that sponsor this forum for some great examples of the different colors/patterns. The two I've had the pleasure of doing business with are South Mountain Reptiles and Kathy Love's-Corn Utopia. Both are great people with great snakes, so if you decide to buy online, I wholeheartedly reccomend both breeders.

Can't wait to se pics of your new corn

Check out South Mountain Reptiles. Don has photos of all kinds of morphs to pick and choose from. I have three Corns & an Albino Nelsons Milksnake from Don, and all are top notch animals.
