WTF Legs weak?

BeamerFrog Dec 07, 2003 12:35 AM

I've had my White's TreeFrog for over 3 years, and have never seen a problem with his legs. Lately, I've been noticing that he seems to have problems with his back legs...as if he can't move them as easily. To best describe, it looks like he tries to pick them up in the same way that a human would try to move their arm after it's been asleep for a while--it still works, but does not seem as strong and is very limp. He also does not seem to have the balance the other frogs do, and when I pick him up by nudging his front hands onto my hand, he'll hang his back legs off, and not try to prop them up on my hand right away. I give him vitamin supplements about once a week on his crickets--I heard too much can obviously be bad for them and affect their legs, but so can too little. So how do I know if the supplmenting is not being done enough or if it's too much. I also read if this is the case--it's irreversible. I have 3 other Whites and none of them show those symptoms at all. Any answers would be much appreciated!

to much calcium supplements wont be bad for their legs, but instead their kidneys. to little can cause calcium deficiency's like MBD(metabolic bone disease) etc. i dont really know why this is happening? how many times do u feed your frogs a week?
i add calcum/multivitamins to my frogs meal just over half their feedings, and they are as healthy as ever.

I feed the frogs 2-3 times a week with vitamin supplements every other feeding. Any remaining crickets are given cricket food so they continue to have vitamins in them as well. If my frog does have MBD, will it result in death? Or just a very bad handicap on the frog? It doesn't to be getting any worse over the course of time I have seen it, but I thought it was rather odd that it happened in the first place....Again my other 3 WTF's are just fine as well and have no signs of having anything wrong with them. Beamer(the one I'm worried about) can also climb up the wall, but she just seems to have some difficulty getting her back legs suctioned onto the surface. Thanks for any advice.

only severe cases of MBD can result in death. once your frog has devoloped MBD it can usually not be reversed, calcium injections from a qualified vet are thought to slightly reverse MBD.

Is the frog overweight? I would advise consulting a qualified amphib vet about this.
