which uvb light??

mike d Dec 07, 2003 07:46 AM

the uvb bulbs that i have in my iguana cage are starting to wear out because i have used them on other cages as well but i was wondering what brand is the best. i have seen repti glo 2.0,5.0,8.0 and i dont know which to get. i also saw the Active UVHeat Mercury Vapor Lamps that t rex makes are those any good? and what watt bulb would be best for a cage 8 feet long 4 feet wide and 6 feet tall(he doesnt go up to the top because he is not a strong climber but is getting better)

any help would be apreciated.

Hi,

We've been trying the mercury vapor bulbs with our chameleon because we keep hearing they're great, but we have found so far that they are not really worth the expense. We have tried three types of bulbs and they have all died prematurely, plus we have not seen any dramatic difference between using them and just using fluorescent bulbs.

We have used Vitalite and Verilux bulbs with our two iguanas for nearly 10 years with excellent results (you can buy these at gardening centers for about $10-15). We raised one baby into adulthood and one we rehabilitated from when he was a subadult. We used the ZooMeds too and again, have not seen a difference between using these bulbs compared to the Vitalites, except that they were twice as expensive and put out an ugly bluish light.

Hope this helps!

Julie
