Heat tape or Bulb for rubbermaid roach container??

jusmebabe Dec 07, 2003 12:24 PM

I am using 66 quart rubbermaid containers for 25 discoids and one for 100 orange head roaches.. I was wondering what most use to heat containers.
The roaches will be here next wednesday so i am trying to get thoughts on lights or tape.
Also if tape is used with thermostatis that sufficient to get temp around 85-90f?
Those of you who use a light what wattage do you use to get temp around 85-90f?
Thanx for any help on this..

I would go with heat tape/pad. A bulb is gonna get HOT....couple 400 degrees and melt or burn if it contacts the plastic. The pad/tape can be set down and will keep everything nice and toasty.

Put the heat pad under the container, not in it. Then you won't have to clean it.

I have crickets that I built a cabinet that holds several containers. I heat the whole cabinet to 90* with heat take on a thermostat.

You could heat a cabinet with a light bulb but it should be done in such a way that your animals don't come directly in contact with the bulb.

I hadn't planned to use inside. I sent off for some heat tape and will go with that. I just want to maintain temps at 85-90 to get my colony going..
Thanx

hey there, I would use heattape, hands down. Heat tape also does not use up half as much electricity as incandescent heat bulbs. Check out my little website that I've been working on. There is a section where I describe all of my feeder insect setups, and pics. It is still underconstruction, but the feeder page is up. I'll be adding more pics soon. Hope this helps,
