Do BD's have a "Blind spot" or is it a "white wall" problem

figuerres Dec 07, 2003 02:52 PM

HI, as Dex has gotten older ... well close to 1 year now so I guess "close to adult" he is now spending a lot of time "roaming" around the apt.

I am starting to think I am going to need to put a helmet on him or pads on the base of my walls.

he can find food just fine, his eyes work....

but when he take off across the room he just can't seem to understand that the base of a white door or the white "baseboard" is a solid object that will not move!!!

so he has a small area on the nose that is brused! Yow!

You can really hear him go "Thunk!" right into the door or wall when he dose this...

he's not "running scared" he just takes off and then looks around as if to say "hey what happend?"

I am really thinking that if there was say a 3 to 6 inch high strip of something with a high contrast patern he might see it and stop.... right now it's just blank white and I do not think it "registers" as his head weaves while he runs that the "white nothing" is in fact a *BIG HARD SOMETHING*

any comments or same problems for others ??

thanks!

hmm, that white wall thing might be an interesting thing to investigate. If he's hurting his nose, I would sure like to figure out what keeps causing him to do this. Then again, I think my bearded may have gone through a stage where he'd take off running and run into the wall occasionally. Hmm, I'd like to study this further, just not sure how.

We have a yellow female that does the same thing (aptly named "Blondie". She'll be out on the floor with other dragons and she'll be the only one that finds the wall. This wall in particular is only about 3ft tall so there is contrast on the top portion of the wall. It and the base boards are white. Does anyone have this happen with a different colored wall?

lol me and my g/f we're laughing about this the other day,my doors and walls of my room are white, my dragon will run full pelt across the room right into the door, he will also scrath and try to climb the walls, much like he does with the glass sides of his tank
quite strange but he only does this with white surfaces no other colours that ive noticed

Both of my dragons slam full speed into white walls and translucent tupperware type containers. But one of mine will also do it into black metal chair legs. That could also have something to do with the fact that when running under the table at full speed, they can't see skinny legs directly infront of them as well as it must be hard to negotiate 20 of them.

Thanks for the posts so far...

so my Dex is not the only one doing this... kinda expected but it's good to hear he's not some kind of freak

I think I will try finding some kind of "trim" thats not to costly and can be removed and see what happens ....

any ideas? something low cost with a patern so he sees it?
like a walpaper trim kinda thing??

Hmm...the local hardware store will have special masking tape for painting. I've seen a bright (neon) green type. Sometimes it's made out of cloth. It's designed specifically for painting and is about as wide as normal masking tape. It's not as sticky, and is designed to not damage or peel paint.

You might try running a strip of it around the baseboards in your room at eye level (your lizards) to see if a flourescent line slows him down. It'll peel off easily, and shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks.
