leopard frog cataracts??????

fritzthefrog Dec 07, 2003 03:42 PM

The last few months my leopard frog has had cloudy eyes (like what happens when they go under water). Sometimes he would just sit around with cloudy eyes, and when i would walk by or make a loud noise he would like open his eyes and they would look normal. But for the last 2 days he will not open his eyes to do anything not even for eating. He still acts fine and eats normally, but its like he senses things, not see them. This sounds very weird to me but could he have cataracts and be blind now? I think hes about 4 or 5 years old. Any feedback would help! Is there any medcation i can help him with?? anything i can do??

thank you,
Joey

What you're describing is its eye lid.

There is some conflicting information here...
"But for the last 2 days he will not open his eyes to do anything not even for eating. He still acts fine and eats normally,"

Most animals this time of year start to go into hibernation, and you may find your frog with its eyes closed. However, you have had this frog for around five years and I would like to think that you would know its behavior by now. I had not able to give you any specific treatments, because you have not provided enough information about its set up including temperatures, substrate, tank furniture, maintenance including water changes and water source. Otherwise, the frog could be getting sick or it could be getting cold. In either case you would definitely want to raise the temperature five to 10 degrees.

I'm sorry i didn't post enough info before and now i know what the eye lid thing is called- the Nictitating membrane. His air temp is about 76-78 degrees, the cage is a 10 gallon thats half water half rocks and the water is changed about once a week and is tap water that i declorinate. I have a small plastic elbow pipe that he hides in sometimes. Also, what i meant was he will still eat and act normally, but his nictitating membrane is always up, so he probably cant see as well. I dont think its hibernating because its happened before in the summer months.

Thanks again,
Joe
