Please Educate me , "south american boa c."

DJW Dec 07, 2003 05:33 PM

I’m in the pet store looking around and I stumble across
This cage with an awesome brown boa kind of looks like a red tail...but more brown
The cage says it's a "South American boa" hmmmmmmmmm...... I’ve
Never heard of one called that exactly... so I talk to the guy a minute about the animal and decide to do some research, and
Look for one from a breeder, because I just can't make myself buy an animal from one of those concentration camp mill type pet
Stores....
I can't find a snake on the net referred to as a "South American boa"
So am I just misinformed? Or am I not looking in the right place?
If any of you could please inform me or redirect me in the right
Place I would be greatly appreciative!
Thanks a mill and thanks for the time you put into your response!

I too am unaware of a "South American Boa" but with all respect... it could be a plain Boa Constrictor Imperator, which generally has a copper/bronze tail colour as opposed to the Boa Constrictor Constrictor (The True Redtail variant).

If you do know your boas 'fairly' well and are SURE that it wasn't either of these then look up Hogg Island Boas and Mexican Boas (not sure of the exact genus) but these two resemble the redtail but have signifacantly different colourings. Also, it may have been an Argentine Boa.

Lastly, you pobably weren't misinformed, just inadequately informed, because if the snake is a boa and it is from a country in South America then technically it is a South American Boa.

Good luck on the hunt and let us know what you do indeed find... as the prospect of a "new" form of Boa leaves a lot to be desired!

First, thank you------the majority of my snake experience has been
With kings and the like, but recently have been looking for a new breed to learn about, I read a book about boa's and they have captured my interest,

The guy or better yet kid said that the "South American boa"
Is "like" a redtail, but instead of red it has more "brownish black"
I might just roll up there and take some pictures and post them
So he can be correctly identified, the snake itself was not as pleasing to the eye as the pattern of a true redtail, maybe the snake is just a "mutt" or a genetically generic redtail? I’m not
Sure but either way I liked the animal,
You have to love those petshop guru's! (Sarcasm of course
Thanks again-

this is just a shot in the dark but could it be a central american boa? i work in a pet store and sometimes when "redtails" are scarce the wholesalers get "central americans" they are darker than the common redtails. the one you described sounds like it could these. how much was the one you saw? $100-$125?

Hey man,

according to this site, the "South American Boa" is a single sub-species of the BCC, which are all from South America. Check it out.
