Anyone try zoomed canned insects for a treat and variety? more

LindsayMarie Jun 02, 2003 03:51 PM

I decided to buy a can of grasshoppers from zoomed. Just to see what they looked like and see if the dragons liked them as a treat and for something different once in awhile. Well when I first opened it, I was like YUCK! They were brown and slimy. I took a closer look and it appears they were cooked in a juice and thats why they are brown and moist. Anyways, they are HUGE! You couldnt feed them to just any dragon. I only feel comfy giving them to my big dragons who tend to chew their food well. Those dragons are 19-21 inches and 440-550 grams with larger heads. You could cut the hoppers in half and feed them to smaller adults and larger sub adults. I cut one in half and gave a half to Daisy and another half to Fiesty. They all seemed to like them. They are just more chewy then most live insects! Was wondering if anyone else has tried the canned foods and what do you think about them? What was your experience. Thanks, LindsayMarie

I've tried the crickets before. The smell is absolutely horrible, and they should be kept refrigerated when not in use or it gets worse even faster. My dragons absolutely loved them. One literally ripped the can from my hand. I was just lucky he left enough crickets for the other dragons to get a few. He gets his last now.

I havent tried the crickets yet but probably will sometime. The grasshoppers dont smell really. They just kind of smell like they were cooked in some sort of "juice". They dont smell like dead bodies or anything....hehe I am keeping them refridgerated, its says to on the can. I am assuming that the dragons cant get parasites from these right? I believe they all are cooked? Lindsay
