ff larvae Q

mbmcewen Dec 07, 2003 06:00 PM

I see a lot of the larvae crawl out of the media and up the walls of the cup. Then they just stop. Are these dead or is this where they finish their metamorphosis? Might be a dumb question, I would just hate to lose that many potential flies.

Thanks,

They will pupate on the walls, then emerge as flies.

This is just an extraneous tip, but you can add some excellsior to the top of the media which will give them some more space for pupating. You can get this-- a shredded wood product, in any artsy-craftsy store. They line baskets for dried arrangements with this. I find that this increases the number of flies that hatch out.

Thanks, I had already done that, but I am mainly seeing them on the cup so far. It's funny, I had no idea what excelsior was for a while. I searched the archives but did not find an explanation. I finally stumbled upon it in Wal-mart
