New to Reptiles and Need Some Help

fishkeeper06 Dec 07, 2003 06:19 PM

Ok so here's the deal. I'm thinking of getting a little baby red eared slider and I have a bunch of questions. I have 3 ten gallon tanks that I'm going to convert into a 30 long. Is that enough room for a fully grown red-eared slider? Also do they need to have their water heated? If so how warm? Would you recommend covering the heater? Would a salamander, a newt, or a fire bellied toad be a suitable tank mate for this turtle? I've read that they eat fish but also to keep them on a staple diet of turtle pellets, is there anything else i should feed them i.e. bloodworms or brine shrimp? Anything else you could offer would be great as well! Thanks!!!

Try to get the book, The General Care and Maintenance of Red-Eared Sliders by Phillipe de Vosjoli. Most pet stores have it, and you can get it at Amazon.com.

A 30 gallon is not big enough for an adult slider. You shouldn't keep anything but turtles with turtles (and maybe fish, but you're risking the fish).

Perhaps you might consider fostering or adopting rather than buying?

Yeah if i was going to buy one I would adopt one. I found a couple sites on the internet that let you adopt the little baby ones and that's how I got interested. I did want to do the responsible thing though and since this turtle won't be able to live as an adult in this tank I don't think I'll buy it. I think i'm going to end up stocking it with fire bellied toads, fire bellied newts, salamanders, and maybe some cheap feeder platys or guppies. Thanks for your reply!

You aren't talking about Arts of Nature, are you? That is not an adoption organization. It's a business out to make money.

Some of the local herp socitie and rescues do fostering, and might get babies that need fostering. A fair number of rescues get in the animals you mentioned as well. Try www.anapsid.org to see if there's one near you.
