Shedded skin in gutfeed

ew1074 Dec 07, 2003 07:11 PM

Warning to anybody new to gutloading mealworms, dont put more than 20 or 30 in your mix at a time. I made the mistake of putting 120 worms in my gutload tub. Now i've got a batch of gutfeed with about 5 or 6 hundred shedded skins, lol. Now i gotta mix up another batch and transfer some of them. They also devour baby carrots in minutes.

I keep thousands together at a time with no problem. Just pick through the skins. If your container is big enough, you can sweep the skins off the top, or blow them off, or someone else even mentioned they use a vaccuum to take them out. The skins are much lighter than the mealworms, so the mealies shouldn't come out.

You're right about the carrots. They work great though, as well as potatos.

i have about 300 mealworms gutloading in one container and 20-30 beetles (plus 80 pupated mealies) in a separate container... and it's good that they're shedding because it shows that they're growing and are well gutloaded you can just pick them out every two or three weeks when you change your gutload, or just blow them out as the other person mentioned. shedded skin isn't anything bad and it's good that they're eating all those baby carrots your mealies are healthy they love potatos too, so you can alternate water sources if you'd like
