Good vet? and Mealworms

FisherCham20 Dec 07, 2003 09:18 PM

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good chameleon vet in the Orlando/Central Florida area? Everything is fine, but would like to know of one just in case. And for checkups (fecal).

Also, I've been trying to feed Bender mealworms and some other worms (wax and butter). He really doesn't seem interested in them. Just wants his crickets. He has eaten about 3 mealworms over the past few weeks but is totally uninterested in the butter and wax worms. I'd love to vary his diet...

As for vets, I think there is a listing of herp vets on www.adcham.com, or at least a link to a listing. As for worms, most chams are not attracted to insects that don't move around much until they try them and decide they like them. Once they try them they will recognize them. Try putting one or two crix in the feeder container with the worms. Your cham may shoot them by "mistake" and realize they are tasty.

Some chams just dont like certian foods. I would not worry as long as he's eating his crickets.

As for a good vet there is the best herp vet a short drive from orlando... I forgot the name of it... and I'm being lazy tonight to go looking through all my papers to find it but if you call pet bizzar they will gladly tell you who the vet is. Another one on west sr 50 is decent its right past alifaya trail. I think its called west orange animal hospital... I'm not sure though, I took Ra there once before I found the other vet, and they were good. its by taco bell thats how I found it

Thanks! I know exactly where those are. I live right near there. Yea, the Pet Bazzar people are great. That's where I got Bender. The bearded dragons they have there are just adorable. Last time they just had them running out loose in the store. lol Thanks again!!

Bender will now eat crickets out of my hand. But usually he just thinks I'm holding my hand there for him to crawl out onto. I think I've caught the chameleon fever.

As for a good Vet in the Orlando area try Ivan Alfonso. He also posts here occasionally. We call him for help and we live in Oregon. He is always willing to help with any situation. His web site is www.mythicalchameleons.com. Send him an e-mail.

Meal worms have sometimes caused disgestive problems because they are hard to digest because of their hard chitinous outer layer (exoskeleton). Super worms would be a better choice. Wax worms or butter worms are very high in fat as they are raised on honey and glycerin. Good for adding fat to your animal, but we use them mainly just as a treat. We use lobster roaches every couple days, haven't found a cham that can resist them yet and they are easy to gutload.

Hope this helps,
