Aaron_Luxenberg Dec 07, 2003 10:43 PM

I have a small alligator snapper 2-3 inch shell and i am planning on getting a cb baby american alligator would these two animals be on in captivity. There are places i have seen where they keep alligatora and yellow bellied sliders together and wanted to make sure this was ok?

Thanks for any and all replies

I wouldn't do it. You are keeping two predatory animals together. They might be small now, but they will fight over food. Sooner or later, one head will get caught in another mouth. Some sliders are large enough that smaller gators can't eat them. For a larger gator though, a slider is a good meal.

Sal,
I will not be keeping sliders in with the gator i will be keeping an Alligator Snapping turtle. I have already worked out the feedings and i am going to feed them seperately. I am only going to keep them together for a short time.

Thanks alot for the response hopefully this helps you.

I have seen it done before without any problems. That does not mean, however, that I would recommend it. The only thing that would concern me is the snapper potentially biting off the foot, toes, or tail of the gator. This sort of thing can happen while the snapper is "fishing." Another thing is that both those animals generate A LOT of waste. You will have to do frequent water changes with two potentially dangerous animals. Also American Alligators grow really quickly in their first couple years, far faster than the Alligator Snapper will. That means they may not be able to live together for very long. An alligator will grow to 2' in its first year, it can be 3'-4' at age two or three. Thats big enough to do considerable damage to anything, including a snapper head, tail, or leg.
