sensitive carapace

I haven't been here for awhile, so someone may have already asked this. My 5 - 5 1/2 year old male sulcata likes to be petted, but when I pet him on the rear of his carapace, he wiggles and backs up. I don't know if it's because he enjoys it, or it bothers him. Any ideas?

All mine do it, it's fun to watch them do the "dance".

Interesting. But I wonder why?

May be a reaction to what might be considerred a mounting?

It's an idea. But he's a male, so he'd be doing the mounting. I wonder if his turtle prostate might be in that area?

But that's what I mean... he may feel like he's being mounted and that's not good?

Anyway, just a thought.

we scratch his rear shell as you described, or even if it's sprayed
with water. After a few times he ignores it, so to get the effect
of showing people how he can dance and do the "boogie woogie"
we don't do it a lot. I've also seen him outside scratching like
that on a hibiscus bush occasionally.

I was wondering, does this only happen to sulcatas? Or is it all torts? Hmm I wonder why?
