Anybody keep both hondurans & corns??

Mattman Dec 08, 2003 09:34 AM

I was just wondering how the two differed in temperment? I have four corns now, but I'm interested in the future maybe picking up a pair of them, and finally filling my small rack. How are they as far as difficulty to care for, and differences in humidity and temps? Is there any other species you would recommend with a like temperment, and needs as the corn snake(I just love the handability of the corns). Thanks for any info and ideas.

Milks are going to be on average more nervous and jumpy/squirmy then Corns. Though I do have an Albino Nelsons Milksnake that was calm from day one. If your going with a Milksnake, I think Nelson's or Sinaloans are great choices, as well as Mexican Milksnakes.
I think even a better choice if you like snakes that tend to be more Corn like, are some of your Common Kingsnakes. I have desert Kings (splendida) and Mexican Black Kings and all are as calm or more then my Corns. As hatchlings, some may rattle their tail or musk, but in my opinion they tend to be more calm then your average Milksnake. Good luck,

Steve

Thanks a lot. I love the colors of the different corn morphs, so I thought another snake with the same great range of colors is the milksnakes. Kingsnake have a more easy going temperament huh? Will have to look into a few different kinds to see if one catches my eye. Thanks for the info and suggestions. I really appreciate it.

Hondurans are much jumpier, especially as hatchlings. They often musk, bite, etc. By the time they are 6 months old they are much more calm, though only about half of mine are as calm as a corn.

Someone else mentioned Nelsons. These are much calmer than the hondurans. The ultimate calm milk is the black milksnake. I have a few of these and they are every bit as docile as a cornsnake. Here's a photo of a black milk...

I have 2 corns and a milk. It's a honduran tangerine dream. I think he is just beautiful! He was real squeermy at first but has calmed down. He has never tried to bite or musk. Just tries to get away. My corns are much more calm but I think with regular handling my honduran will calm down even more. He was hatched in July '03. I've read you shouldn't handle hatching milks but that's what I did the day I got him. And he has calmed down alot. I don't do anything different with my milk then my corns. My corns have UTH and lights for the day where as my milk just has a under the tank (UTH) heater. I've read they are noctural so don't need lights. I just have lights on my corns to help with heating. "Zorro" has gotten longer since I've had him and is looking cool. He did go off his feed when it's time for him to shed other then that he eats well and is just a pretty snake to own. He also loves to hide 24/7.
