Got Space For Fun Creatures, now what?

fishkeeper06 Dec 08, 2003 11:26 AM

Ok so I am building a 30 long out of three old ten gallons and I was reading up on the internet about fire bellied newts and rough skinned salamanders. Can i put these two guys together along with maybe a fire bellied toad and some cheap feeder guppies or platys? What other kind of fun creatures could i put in this tank that would like the mixed environment of water and land? thanks

No, don't do it! You can't mix amphibians like you can fish, they just aren't community critters. Here is an article that shows what can happen when you try:

oooh thanks for that! I had no idea that would have ended badly. Now can i put them together if i divide the down the middle(the long way)? I mean as long as they can't get to each other that would be ok right?

Yes, that would be OK, just remember these animals can climb glass and get through any small space. But to me it seems a waste of a nice big tank to divide it. If it were mine, I'd set it up for one larger aquatic species - axolotls or sirens or ribbed newts, something like that. Or just a large habitat for a bunch of firebelly toads (which are quite beautiful and could live nicely in a big aqua-terrarium).

Just wondering:
If his divider splitting the tank was not watertight, could animals on one side get harmfully exposed to microbes or disease or whatever herps have from whatever other sort of creature he has on the other side via the water?
