Orange Tail Colouring Question

LeoBeginner Dec 08, 2003 12:42 PM

This is probably more for the breeders, but any experience is appreciated and welcome.

I have a high yellow, abberant patterned leo who is about three and a half months old. After her most recent shed (2 weeks ago), I noticed some fine lines of bright orange on both sides of the base of her tail. There were also some small spots on the top near the base. Since then, they've grown a bit, and the colour is much brighter. Although they're still small and you have to look for them to really notice them.

The question is: can I expect this colour to come in more? In significant amounts? Will it come and go with age like the lavendar on her back immediately after a shed? Do high-yellows commonly show orange on their tails? (Her parents were a normal and a high-yellow/patternless)

I know it's all speculation at this age, but I'm just curious as to what determines the orange colouring and what's commonly observed. How does the 'neon' orange fit in (work) genetically (for a non-carrot tail)? Is it a dominant/het characteristic?

I think that's all the questions I have for today.

My high yellow is also starting to show some orange on its tail. Its not a lot and I just started noticing recently. I guess the only way to know is to wait and see unless you know what the parents looked like might help. Its probably fairly common for high yellows to have a little orange on their tail but maybe some of the people who know more about leo genetics can be more specific

Don't quote me on this, but I think that hi-yellow and orange traits may be linked (as in they tend to appear together, I'm not implying a physical linkage necessarily in case any of you molecular genetecists are getting rowdy reading this). I've seen lots of high yellows and Ive never seen one without at least a trace of orange. I've also never seen a nice carrot tail without a high-yellowish or tangerine color. I've have, however, seen a few patternless geckos that show no yellow whatsoever as adults and still have traces of orange (btw if someone reads this and thinks "thats impossible" as Ive been told a few times, I've got pick of my pat male with orange on his tail. what's the deal?). Hope that
