Confused on cage sizes for IJ and Jungle carpets...

Tigergenesis Dec 08, 2003 01:05 PM

I've looked at a number of care sheets and poured through some of the posts on this site, but I'm still a bit confused on the cage size requirements for these 2 species. I'd be interested in a male (assuming they are smaller than females).

Thank you in advance.

A good rule of thumb is, the cage needs to be at least as long as half the lenth of the snake( or as high depending on whether or not you prefere aborial setups or not). Ex: Jungles max around 6-7ft which would be a minimum of 3 to 3 1/2 ft in lenth for the cage. IJ usually max at 4-5 so 2 to 2 1/2 ft is what you'd want. As for height and width I prefere at least 18 inches for both. This allows crawling room and enough space for a low branch if you want to add one. And of course the more space you can afford the better...

Hope this helps,

I have a 50 gallon breeder tank (36Lx18Wx19H). Could i comfortably house a male IJ?

Thanks for your reply.

You could house either of those in a 50 gallon, but you might have to build a top for it to control humidity and heat loss.

I've read some care sheets that say humidity for carpets needs to be 60-70% (I assume they meant all the time), but then I ran across some who said they only make sure it's that high during shed or not at all. Which is correct?

Also, am I correct that carpets are more slender than say Ball Pythons? Anyone have any average adult male weights of Jungles or IJ they know of?

I'd say an average weight for an adult male jungle might be 2-4 kg. An adult male IJ might be a little smaller. As far as humidity, I never pay any attention to it--even when the snakes are in shed. Of course, my snakes are housed in cages with little ventilation so the humidity is probably kept high enough with just the water bowl and the respiration of the snakes.

The best advice I could give you is NOT to use an aquarium. I'd use a plastic storage box when the snake is young, and then a custom plastic snake cage when it grows older. If you use these cages, the humidity won't really be an issue. At the most, you'd need to mist it while it's in shed.

Carpets do not need a lot of humidity all the time. Around 50-60% is what I do and have been told is a good range with periods of higher humidty around shedding time.

They are slender compared to snakes of the same lenth. Balls stay fairly slender themselves as far as I have seen. But for example, you compare a 6ft Burm or Boa to an adult Carpet, then definately a Carpet is the thinner snake.

Now I'm thinking I'd rather get a female JCP or IJ for a Boaphile 36x24x18. Could a female of either of these species be housed in a cage this size for life? Or just the IJ since they are smaller?

Thanks for all the help so far.

Its possible...you'll be taking a bit of a bet though that your female will stay small. You might ask around and find out if anyone is breeding smaller sized JCP. This won't garantee your snake will stay small but its probably your best bet. The largest possible snake you can put in your cage for life is 6ft long. Just keep that in mind...

Just to make sure I understand, with a cage 36x24x18 I could house a single:

male Jungle Carpet
or
a male or female IJ

Is this about right? Thanks.

You can house an adult 6ft snake. That usually includes anything BUT Large JCP females, Diamonds, Bredli, and Coastal Carpets.
