Get a corn! That's my opinion. Somehow a snake that 'balls' up does not appeal to me at all. I've also heard ball's have feeding problems..like they don't eat for weeks at a time. Also if I might add...a 55 gal tank is way to big for baby snakes (unless you plan on getting an adult). Babies like to feel secure in a small enclosure then move up as they get bigger. But of course this is only my 2 cents..

don't limit yourself to either a corn or a ball!there are a lot of interesting snakes that can be housed just like either of those.think kingsnake, ratsnake, housesnake, western hognose, candoia complex boas, water & even garter/ribbon snakes.
just make sure you read all you can about the critter you want & pick a healthy specimen!

For a 55 gallon tank, I would recomend a grown corn. I have a 55 myself that I put two Ball pythons in ( one grown, one a juvenile). Both of them stopped eating until I moved them to smaller aquariums. Balls dont seem to like that big of enclosure. And my personal opinion is to get a "modified" corn, something that would not be seen in the wild.

I myself enjoy balls and them not liking large space is not always true I have my ball about 5ft long in a 7by5by3 foot cage along with my 2 redtail boas and he loves the crusing space. so it all depends on your snake. but this is my option.
