Question about feeding and crickets

drthsideous Dec 08, 2003 02:05 PM

So I have had this planted arborial tank for about a year now and the original plan was to put red-eyes in it but I never got around to it and just was satisfied with the plants. Well now I finally want to put the red-eyes in but I am worried that crickets are gonna eat through my plants. Is there anything I can do to prevent or minimize this? Has anyone had any luck feeding the freeze dried crickets to their red-eyes? Oh yeah and I read somewhere that distilled water should be given to the frogs, but in my organic chemistry class I was told that distilled water was extremely unhealthy for living things? Any help would be much appreciated.
thanks
Jeff

The crickets most likley not eat through your plants. I guess it depend on what kind of plants you have, but personally i have a giant pothos and some orchids and the crickets have never touched them. But this could be due to the fact they never last very long.... As for freezed dried crix, i would not recomend it, ive never tried them with my frog, but i have a 5 year old leo who eats anything that moves, or resembles a bug and even she had a hard time with them because they didnt move(they were those cricket in a can things though, not freezdried) also i wouldnt use distilled water, apparently it can cause frogs to bloat (never actually seen this) and it dosent contain any minerals or anything. i would recomend a dechlorinator made for amphibians in plain tap water or just let the water stand for 48 hours.
