A tripoding nile?....................

skyliner Dec 08, 2003 02:36 PM

Um ok ive never heard of it before so if its normal ignore this rant.Today i went into my niles enclosure to throw in her mice(3),as i went in i noticed she was out basking, nothing unusual.I threw the mice onto the dirt and was about to leave again when she threw a wobbly, darting from one end of the enclosure to the other-finally she stopped about halfway hissing and puffing at me and then reared up on her hind legs still hissing and puffing.I can only assume she mistook me for a herculean rodent that was looking for lunch, thus she was getting herself to look as big as possible.IS it just coincidence or can they acctually pull this off when ever they feel the need?Your oppinion's appreciated and thanx in advance

Last week while feeding my varanids mine walked up behind me & we startled each other. I thaught it was my male albig., I house 3 albigs. & an ornate in one room, so I turned around to feed it. Upon turning around to see my ornate nile who mormally goes in hiding when I enter the room, she tail whips me. Then after noticing I have food she tripods for awhile then lounged for the food. I seen sevral niles both ornate & common do this. Indicus & quite a few other varanids also do this tripoding thing.

The only monitor to "apparently" not be able to tripod is the savanna monitor, V. exanthematicus. Even komodo monitors tripod...they all do it to reach prey, see over the tall grass, bluff against potential rivals and on-coming predators like jackals, leopards, snakes, etc...

As in a pet store sav? (not totally sure of designations) I have two and both will stand up on their tails and hind legs(which is what I understood to be tripoding).....usually for prey, or for checking something out. Am I wrong? Just curious. Who said they 'apparently' didn't?
