How do you know if your female is gravid?

djfuente Dec 08, 2003 02:59 PM

My beardie Giblet has been acting just a little different lately. She has been digging some lately and she has never done that before. I don't think she's gravid because I purchased her on Aug 31 from a reptile show when she was only 6" long so I think she's only like 5months old max and she's 15" long now. I only have her so if she was they would be infertile eggs. Any other things to look out for?

Has she been with a male? If not, it is still possible that she could be carrying infertile eggs.
Try gently placeing your hand under her belly, and see if you can feel eggs...
Since she is digging around, you might want to put her in a containor filled with several inches of moist playsand/vermiculite just in case!

Yeah, she does seem pretty young to carry eggs. Very young I would think to have infertile eggs, but surprises could happen. Youngest I heard of was just under 8 months old, and she had fertile cause of owner mistake. Infertile eggs are pretty hard to feel. I could only feel my Ambers eggs once in the bath when she would puff up then exhale the air. On the exhale I could feel tiny, tiny marble shaped lumps. A week or two before I finally felt them she cut way down on food intake which was a sign, and when she started scratching and acting weird I put her in the bin and she laid the next evening. Watch her appetite, and double Check that the temps are correct in the cage, and that she is not looking to escape heat. Good Luck. Let us know if it is in fact infertile eggs cause that is awful young, but would inform others that it could happen to them.

Because she is so young and she hasn't been with a male it is more than likely she is not gravid, although it can happen. If she can see natural light (ie: a window in the room) then she is probably looking for a place to settle down for the winter. Offer a hide box and see what happens. Has she cut down her feeding? What are your temps? What is your daily light cycle in the enclosure?

Well, I tried feeling her belly and I couldn't feel anything egg-like in there. Her light cycle is from 7am until 8pm, I put her wih this long of a cycle to prevent her from brumating since she is still young and has growing to do. Her appetite is still the same I would say, if anything she is eating more lately.

I truly don't mean to offend anyone, but I keep reading how people want to stop their animals from brumating and I can't understand why everyone wants to keep their dragons from doing what is natural for them. If they are young, sure it may take an extra 2 or 3 months to reach maturity, but it's not actually stunting the animal's growth.
