Green and labyrinth morphs being incompatible???

toddbecker Dec 08, 2003 03:05 PM

I posted a question in the Ball forum about the possibilities that seperate morphs might prove to be incampatible with each other. What I mean by this is the fact that one morph might "overwhelm" the other morph and therefore only one of the two traits wuold show through. I was informed that this is called epistasis and does occur. A responder stated that though it is rare that it could and more than likely will occur, especially in the ball pythons with such a large number of the morphs not yet combined. Anyway, the responder stated that he believed the the green and labyrinth morphs were like this and the green morph "overwhelms" the labyrinth. Does anyone know if this is fact. I had been planning on combine albino, green, and labyrinth down the road and was wondering now if this would be a waste of my time and efforts. Thank you in advance to all that respond, Todd

Whether or not one morph trait or another is more dominant or not doesn't really matter in the bigger scheme of things. Simply because of the unknown. It is the occasional freak offspring that you will produce while attempting to tripple up the homo traits that is the real payoff. Not so much the tripple trait morphs. While this is great in and of itself, it is also the freakishly new stuff that may emerge while genetically experimenting that will be the next craze. Because you can never be too sure just what you might get. So it's a win win.

triple hets were bred this year(green, granite, albino). The offspring that were hatched showed all three pattern morphs to some degree. The "green/granite" was the typical green coloration, kinda brighter like a green het albino. But showed the granite pattern as well. There was also an "albino green/granite", it was different. With the dark pigment removed, the granite markings were less obvious. But the possible het offspring were very cool. The albino's(possible het green/granite), are very bright colored, with very prominent markings dorsally. Some of the normal(possible triple het) are the one's that seem to definatley show the results of all three morphs. They are brightly colored compared to normal colors. And the "green" trait if very noticeable, with small spots and blotches typical of animals het for green. And the granite trait showed with the typical puzzle pattern of het granites. But like I said with awesome coloration, very light or hypo'ish( for a lack of a better word". You can find pics on another website's forums(www.bobclark.com). Using the search option.
But I do agree that the green trait does wash out a little of the other's that are being used. It is almost patternless anyway. But triple hets(albino, granite, lab) would be interesting to breed together. Thought about doing this myself, but went with normal labs instead. Since their are not many people producing them.

Thanks for the input. Regardless of what others said I would probably have tried it anyway, I was just curious what others had to say on this topic. I plan one using albino's double het for green and labyrinth instead of the triple hets. It will eliminate some of the combinations and get me to the desired creature quicker then with the triple hets. Anyway thanks for the replies, Todd
