Substrates...Dirt?

tc_legacy Dec 08, 2003 04:19 PM

I was wondering if packed dirt/loam would be okay for a leopard gecko substrate? Anyone ever tried that? Doesn't seem to me that dirt (especially if it was packed) would pose the problems you find with sand.. Adding in some plants and shale/rock would make a nice viv IMHO. Opinions?

I'm using a dirt/sand/fine vermiculite mix in a large sterilite tub. It's something I'm just trying out for a trio. So far they love it and have dug out a burrow.

I have it sloped, about a foot at the deepest. I have two heat pads taped to the sides. It is a tall bin about 15 inches high. The dirt is just plain old topsoil. The burrow is about 7" deep. They seem to like it alot, but I won't switch all my leos to this set-up. It is more of just a fun thing for me to do. Breaks up the monotany of keepign a large group of animals...lol.
