Thinking about getting a Tegu next, any advice?

RalphSnakeMan Dec 08, 2003 06:16 PM

Hello all,

I'm a member on many of the snake forums on here, but this is my first post in the Tegu forum.

I am thinking about getting a Tegu as my next pet. The reason for this is I just recently was enlightened as to the great extent of their intelligence and ease of maintenance. I am thinking of getting an Argentine Red Tegu. Preferably a female since they stay a tad smaller?(Or am I wrong?)

I was wondering what the recommended/required cage sizes are for a Full-sized red tegu?

Also any information on care of tegus that you can point me in the direction of would be greatly apprecaited.

Any other advice/tips/concerns for a first time Tegu owner? I am no newbie to reptiles as I've had them all my life, currently I have the animals listed in my Sig. but would really like to add a Tegu to the list!

Thanks for your time,
Ralph

I like to handle and "play" for lack of a better word with my herps all the time, what age/size would be best for me to aquire a Argentine Red Tegu that will already be somewhat tame? I don't mind taming him down some if he is slightly aggressive as I've had to do that before with other herps that I have had but I don't want to get one that is too aggressive either. The two honduran milks that I have are overly aggressive to the point where they are unable to be handled and it really upsets me, I wish i could handle them...but unfortunately this is not the case..So with that said I want a Tegu that will "hang out" with me as some of you have put it and will be "puppy dog" tame and possibly even potty trained or at the age where they can be potty trained(BTW that has to be one of the coolest things about Tegus the fact that they are intelligent enough to do that!) what age/size do you recommend I get?

thanks again!
Ralph

tegus are awesome animals. 6x3x3 (LxDxH) is the minimum for a full grown tegu. they are active and needs there space. right now my tegu/s are in a 8x4x4 cage and i am building a 12x6x6 for them. the more room the better. read up on www.agamainternational.com and you can email Bert who is the owner he responds 90% of his emails within 2hrs and is amazingly smart.
